All 11th grade students will take the PSAT/NMSQT (The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) Centennial will have a LIMITED NUMBER of calculators for the Juniors to use on the PSAT/NMSQT. Students are highly encouraged to bring their own calculator as use of a school calculator is NOT guaranteed. Students bringing personal calculators must ensure that they follow College Board Calculator Guidelines. There is no cost to the student for any PSAT test. Students will be registered by the school. All 12th grade students will take the ASVAB. A common misconception is that the ASVAB is only for military purposes; however, it is beneficial for all students. The career exploration scores can help determine readiness for further education and training in different career areas. The ASVAB is similar to standardized tests like the SAT, but it measures an individual’s potential rather than accumulated knowledge. Scholarships & Financial Aid Scholarships are in Career Cruising Career Cruising Instructions (Video) FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. You must complete this application to receive grants, scholarships, work study and/or loans for college. The FAFSA is also a requirement for the Burleson Opportunity Fund. To complete the application visit: https://fafsa.ed.gov/ College & Career Center UTA GO Center The GO Center is a part of the Centennial College and Career Center. GO Centers are staffed by UTA students from different majors and classifications who are trained on how to meet the needs of a diverse student population. UTA GO Center staff is trained to mentor high school students, provide tutoring, and guide them through the process that leads to college enrollment. Parents must sign a permission slip so that the GO Center can evaluate and report on the effectiveness of the program. SAT/ACT SAT/ACT-- As a general rule, Juniors should take the SAT & ACT in the spring of their Junior year. Students should then retake one or both of the exams before applications are due in the fall/early spring of Senior year. If you are on Free/Reduced lunch, contact Mrs. Pair to get a waiver to take the SAT and ACT for free. You will also get four College Application Fee Waivers! From the Student Support Counselor
Parents,
So, as a parent, you may be asking yourself, “Where do I go to find information regarding cyberbullying, bullying in general, etc.?” I have compiled some links for you to use as resources that I regard fairly high due to research put forth in their studies. Below you will find some of my “go to’s” for the latest information. There are resources on these sites for both you and your children.
stopbullying.org
kidshealth.org
cyberbullying.org
Stopcyberbullying.org
connectsafely.org
In addition, I am going to share some video links that might be helpful as well.
Below are some of my favorites.
Links to a Good Morning America segment on how to set controls on Instagram to help prevent bullying
Video on teens reacting to Amanda Todd
Assorted videos on cyberbullying
Videos to possibly watch with your children that show how to overcome bullying and some famous people that used to be bullied and how they moved past.
If you are not familiar with the story of David Molak, I encourage you to visit http://www.davidslegacy.org/ and learn more. From this tragic event, David’s Law was passed. This law not only puts in guidance on how schools approach bullying, but it also contains a component making the parents of those found guilty of bullying to take steps to ensure their student does not continue to bully.
I hope that these past few editions have been helpful and that you were able to take away something of use. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
