Lincoln School News
January
Message from Mrs. Hawkins
Lincoln Families and Friends,
I was hopeful that 2022 would be a year where we could move forward and not worry about the effects of the pandemic. Unfortunately, January of 2022 was one of the most challenging months so far. We had record numbers of student and staff illnesses. Some of these were COVID and other absences were a result of influenza. Every day it was a challenge to cover classrooms and positions throughout the school. Teachers are trying to continue instruction while keeping students caught up from extended absences. I am so thankful for our Lincoln team where the culture is to do whatever it takes to support students and adults in the building. I am also thankful for our students and families. We appreciate your understanding and support. It hasn’t been easy for you either. If we stick together, we can get through the rest of the school year accomplishing our mission of reaching and inspiring Every Learner, Every Day.
Those of you who drop off children in the morning or pick up in the afternoon have noticed the increase in cars around Lincoln. The cold weather results in more vehicles in the parking lot. I appreciate your patience as you navigate the traffic. Here are a couple reminders to keep the traffic running smoothly.
Because it is so congested as you enter the parking lot on the west side, drive as far to the east as possible (toward the flagpole). All students, including kindergarten and first graders can enter the main doors and walk to their classrooms from there.
Students should only exit the vehicle when it is parked in the drop off lane next to the sidewalk.
Do not leave your vehicle unattended in the drop off lane.
If you want to avoid the traffic in the lot, consider dropping your student off in the soccer field parking lot. There is a sidewalk from the pavilion to the school and it is plowed all winter.
If you are dropping off or picking up on Truman, please stay to the south of the bus area. There is another sidewalk from 14th St. to the school and it is also plowed in the winter.
Please avoid parking on the west side of Truman and trying to cross the street between buses.
We are celebrating the end of first semester with a skating party on February 11th. Thanks to the Lincoln Phy Ed Department for organizing this winter experience. Keeping kids active during our MN winter can be challenging, but worth the effort. We will continue to play outside for recess when the temperatures are above zero degrees. Thanks for sending students with the appropriate winter clothing.
I wish you and your family the best for 2022. May you enjoy good health and happiness.

Montessori Program
Accepting Enrollment 2022-2023 school year
What is Montessori Education?
The Montessori approach to education embraces individualized instruction for children, mixed-age groupings of students, a structured curriculum, and a prepared environment, using specialized Montessori teaching materials. Montessori classrooms provide an environment that supports independent, self-directed learning, and self assessment.
Dr. Maria Montessori, who developed this educational program, believed strongly that parents play a critical role in their child’s education.
Montessori students display:
Self-directed work habits
High level of responsibility to work independently
Enjoyment of hands-on learning
There are two Montessori Classrooms:
E1- Grades 1-2
E2– Grades 3-5
If you are interested in the Montessori program and Owatonna Public Schools, please complete the enrollment form found on our website by February 15th, 2022. Montessori will be housed at McKinley Elementary- 1050 22nd St NE, Owatonna, MN. The administration will review student registrants for grade level balance and instructional needs. However, the primary basis for selection will be first come/first served.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the McKinley office at 507-444-8200.

Science Fair
Your child has the opportunity to prepare and display a science project at the Lincoln School Science Fair that will be held on Thursday, March 10th. A Science Fair project is a great learning experience. It gives students the chance to think and work independently, develop/define individual science interests, and engage in critical thinking. It is also an excellent opportunity for students to learn and understand the scientific process.

Inclement Weather and School Closing Reminders
When decisions are made to alter the school day or cancel it due to inclement weather, every effort is made to communicate that decision to parents in a timely manner through our school messenger system, the website, and local radio and TV stations.
Parents can choose to receive notifications via text message, phone call, email, and/or parent portal inbox messages. To help us contact households efficiently, be sure to update home, work and/or cellphone information in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, and verify that the appropriate boxes are checked to receive notifications. This will ensure that you automatically receive information about weather-related school closures in a timely manner.
