Our budding garden space...

Many thanks to Mike Jipping at Broken Tooth Brewery for the generous spent grain donation, Anchorage Cooperative Preschool plus many neighbors for their organic leaves donations and the PTO for funding over 200sq ft of garden space to enjoy for many years to come!

Two WIN groups from Mrs Perry and Mrs Westfall’s classrooms have enjoyed starting seeds and building healthy, all natural soil for some bio intensive food raising this summer. After building the frame, the kids laid cardboard down for a natural weed blocker and layer of carbon. The next layer was about 2 inches of spent grains for nitrogen followed by a few inches of leaves from a non chemically fertilized yard. Multiple layers watered down will be a super bed of healthy soil for food to grow in. We are looking forward to planting Tomatoes, Sunflowers, Corn, Beans, Snow Peas, Pumpkins, Squash, Herbs, edible flowers(marigolds, pansies and nasturtiums), Lettuce, Kale, Potatoes and more(we will label😂).

This garden project was inspired by the book Sweet Home Alaska by Carol Estby Dagg which takes place in Palmer during the 1930s Great Depression when President Roosevelt set up the New Deal colony in Alaska to help struggling families start over with land and resources. Fantastic pioneering story for kids! In addition to this book, many of the kids chose to read books about Robert Service and the goldrush in Alaska, The Great Depression and of course books on plant science like how plants convert sunshine into energy. We’ve had a great time reading, learning and working together! I hope to see many families enjoying this awesome bio intensive garden and the delicious, all natural healthy food it produces this summer!

Kalli Hannafious

Artist in Schools

A local artist, Jen Jolliff, will be joining some of our art classes May 2-May 13th. Thanks to a grant funded opportunity through Alaska Council for the Arts, some of our students will have an opportunity to work with her. Ms. Jolliff specializes in visual and literary arts: collaborative murals and mosaics, map making, printmaking, poetry composition. We are excited to see what amazing work our students produce as they work with her.

Donations for Ukrainian Refugees coming to Alaska...

One of our teachers, Mrs. Furlong, has a connection with an organization that is actively working to bring just over 600 Ukrainian refugees to AK.The below flyers give you more information about the organization but, as a school family, I would love it if we could support these people that are being forced to flee to save their lives by providing them with some basics (see flyer for a list). Mrs. Furlong will be taking donations of the items listed on the flyers Until Friday, May 13th.

** Repeat ** Hello Scenic Park Families,

Hi, my name is Marco Christian, and I am excited to be part of the Scenic Park Community as your Principal for the 2022/2023 school year. I was born and raised in Northeastern Pennsylvania (only minutes from Scranton, home of “The Office”) and moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 2001. I enjoy hunting, fishing, coaching baseball, flag football, and traveling with my family. I am married to my wife Joanne, a teacher in the Anchorage School District and together we have 2 children, Hunter 15 years old, a Sophomore at Service High School and Brooke 13 years old, a 7th grader at Hanshew Middle School. I currently serve as Assistant Principal at Fairview Elementary.

I graduated from Wilkes University in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor Degree in Environmental Science. Upon graduating, I decided to move to Alaska with my brother to experience something new and different, and in July of 2001 we began our journey. I started substitute teaching the following year with the Anchorage School District, working at West High School as well as many Elementary Schools throughout the district. Working with students changed my career path and I decided to pursue an educational degree. I enrolled in Grand Canyon University and received my Masters in Elementary Education. I completed the program in 2009 and began my career with the Anchorage School District, working as an elementary classroom teacher in grades Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th. In 2021, I completed my studies in Educational Leadership and received a Master Degree through Grand Canyon University.

I am looking forward to meeting and working with the students, staff and families of the Scenic Park Community.

Sincerely,

Marco Christian
