LETTER TO PARENTS FROM DR. STALOCH
Dear PLSAS Families,
I have been thinking of all of you during this challenging time and I hope you are well.
With today’s announcement from Governor Walz, PLSAS buildings will remain closed through April 30, but the quality education and support we provide to our 8,800 students will continue. At this point, our district will implement our PLSAS distance learning plan beginning March 30 through April 30. Per the Governor, we will plan to reopen schools May 5.
PLSAS teachers and administrators have been working continuously since our schools closed to prepare for distance learning, and we are ready! Our priorities with distance learning align with our priorities for everyday learning in the district, in that we want learning to be: personalized, purposeful and empowered.
Additionally, our district theme this year is #WeArePLSAS #RelationshipsMatter. As we have been designing learning in new ways, we are also reminded that without relationships and students feeling a sense of love and belonging, learning does not happen. As we work to implement the academic portion of our distance learning plan, we will also ensure that we support the social-emotional needs of our students by connecting with them virtually, staying positive, managing emotions and showing empathy and love for students.
In our planning, we have prioritized what’s really important, simplified things where we can and put together a plan that is flexible. Because this is new for all of us, we know we will learn things along the way and make adjustments.
PLSAS Distance Learning Plan
Per the Governor’s order, our plan includes careful thought and consideration of student learning, health and wellness, IEPs, meals, childcare, English Learners, early learning, broadband access, communication and assessment just to name a few. PLSAS Distance Learning: Parent Guide
We have also designed a Distance Learning Plan Parent’s Guide to help families while students learn at home. This guide includes school contact information, technology learning tools, a sample daily schedule and much more. In addition, I would like to highlight the following areas in which you may have some questions.
Child Care
The district will provide child care to district enrolled students Preschool through age 12 (Children age three by September 1, 2019) who are children of emergency workers critical to the State’s response to COVID-19 defined under Tier 1. Verification of parent employment will include securing a letter from the employer or showing an employment badge. See the full list of emergency workers whose children qualify for this care. https://bit.ly/2y6pvKJ
Because school staff are so critical in providing care for emergency workers, our district will allow educators, who must report to buildings, to access the same care for children of families of emergency workers. At this time, the district will provide transportation to and from the care upon request.
There is no cost for child care services at this time. Child care hours are 7:00 am - 5:00 pm at WestWood/Edgewood schools.
Our district will be providing care through licensed staff, paraprofessionals and Kids’ Company staff. Care staff will adhere to the MDH social distancing guidelines https://bit.ly/39pmy5b. The district will use a screening tool when a child arrives for child care (drop-off) and will use it to assess for illness throughout the day. https://bit.ly/2WKsfIe
Registration for emergency child care will be completed online https://bit.ly/3bkyAOm
Meals for Students
Beginning Monday, March 30, we will begin delivering free packaged breakfast and lunch meals to students ages 3-18 at a variety of locations throughout the district: list https://bit.ly/3bi1i2u or map. NURSE NOTES
We want everyone to know that we miss all the kiddos and families and hope everyone is doing well. During this time of uncertainty everyone should know that they can make a difference. You have the ability to save lives. Use it. Stay home! Health Services and our Resources Officers want our PLSAS community to stay safe, stay healthy and stay home to saves lives.
We would like to recruit all families to help us spread the word. Find a creative way to spread the message “You have the ability to save lives. Use it. Stay home!” or recreate the collage and post it with the #PLSASHealthServices and #TogetherWeWillGetThroughThis
Again each and every one of us has the ability to save lives. Use it. Stay home! Let’s keep each other safe and healthy by keeping ourselves safe and healthy.
