The Cloud Connection
Sept. 2, 2013
Math: Students are doing a nice job with our first unit on Place Value. This week we'll be working on rounding large numbers and I'll introduce a few problem solving strategies. We'll have a test on Chapter 1 on Friday. Homework for the week: Tues. pg. 41,42; Wed. pg. 47,48 and Thurs. I'd like students to complete the chapter review so they're ready for the test. pg. 49-51.
Reading: Students will be sharing their thoughts on our first book, The Most Beautiful Place in the World on Tuesday. I'll be administering the Gates Reading test in vocabulary and comprehension Wed. and Thurs. I'll also have students take the Scholastic Reading Inventory which will give us a reading Lexile level. We'll be using lexile levels to help us select books that will help us grow as readers. Students will be reading informational texts about insects this week as we learn more about our tiny friends. Reading CBMs are also scheduled for this week. This is a quick check on reading fluency. What a busy week!
Language: I'll be going over Word Choice with students this week, and we'll have a chance to practice how to incorporate strong descriptive words in our writing. Students will also have a skill sheet on basic language mechanics this week. I'm hoping to squeeze in the time needed to introduce our first few vocab. cards this week. Students need their 3x5 cards for this subject.
Social Studies: We'll work on our weekly geography this week.
Science: We took photos of plants and insects last week. This week we'll look at some of our photos and see if we can identify any of the images we caught on film. We'll also be reading from our National Geographic Explorers about insects. We go over the life cycle of an insect; metamorphosis.
Other items: Thank you to all of the attendees for our Open House. I enjoyed having a chance to visit with you and look forward to working with your child this year.
We have a guest presenter on invasive species along our trail on Wed. Please make sure students are always prepared to be outside as we'll be outdoors often.
If students want to order from one of the book orders I sent home I'd like to have their orders by Fri. Sept. 6. Please send checks payable to Scholastic or Arrow, not to me or WHE.
I still have a few families that need to pay the craft/magazine fee. If you haven't done so please try to get that turned in soon. The magazines are already starting to arrive. Thank you.
