Our Classroom Learning Time
Our Focus Points
Reading / Language Arts
Students are continuing to work through our Daily 5 rotations, Read to Self, Read to Someone, Partner Fluency Time, Listening Time, and Teacher Time. Students are also meeting with me one-on-one through the week to work on specific goals. Our comprehension focus this week is a using our prior knowledge to connect to text as well as to the story elements. We will continue to work on our summarizing and identifying author's purpose throughout the trimester. Other areas of focus throughout our Daily 5 rotations are: response to reading, writing, fluency, listening, and word building. I am very excited to see their excitement and focus to their day to day reading and writing grow. We are truly building life long readers and writers.
Math (Chapter 4/Unit 4)
We are excited to begin the trimester with our new "MY MATH" journals and lessons all of which focus on our grade level standards. Our current unit will be focusing on introductory division skills and concepts. Vocabulary checks will be given throughout the unit. We will be discovering the connections between multiplication and division.
Writing
Students are continuing to gather stories in their writer's notebooks. This is an ongoing process through the entire year. We are also creating an interactive "grammar" notebook that students will use through the year. This notebook will include pages that focus on: nouns, proper nouns, possessive nouns, verbs... Students will also be working on building stories with multiple paragraphs, using commas in a series, developing informational pieces on a variety of topics and working on their revising and editing skills. Paragraph structure and legible handwriting are continuously encouraged and taught.
Science
We will begin our next science after returning from our winter break. Our next unit is on traits, ecosystems, and habitats.
Social Studies
In transition from our focus on "map skills", we are currently studying the difference between a hemisphere, continent, country, region, state, and city. They will have opportunities to look further at several different countries as well. This is in preparation for our more detailed study of Michigan that we will continue to dig into this trimester. Some Michigan topics will include: natural resources, weather/climate, landforms, agriculture, government, economics, and historical events and people.

WELCOME BACK!!!
1. POPCORN will be sold every Friday during lunch for $.50 a bag. Plain popcorn only! Proceeds to supplement the 4th Grade Mackinac Island Field Trip.
2. WINTER OR SPRING - As usual, our Michigan weather keeps us guessing. Please be sure your child has the proper clothing to go outside for recess. The playground is wet and muddy on some days so perhaps an extra pair of jeans could be sent to school in case of “accidents.” Boots will help children’s feet stay dry and prolong the life of their shoes. Hats & mittens should be sent to school in case the temperature drops suddenly.
As we have mentioned before, outside recess is important to each and every child. They enjoy getting out of the school building and it refreshes them for the afternoon. If for some reason your child is not allowed outside for a day, please send a note to that effect. Thank you so much for your cooperation.
3. EASTERN BRANCH LIBRARY – Here’s a reminder of some of the great January events we’ll be having here at the Eastern Branch Library, located right next to Arby’s on East Michigan Ave.
Saturday, January 10 at 11:00 a.m. – Stella the Story Dog will be here. Kids can curl up next to her and read till their hearts are content. This is a wonderful chance to encourage reading aloud for shy readers.
Saturday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m. – We will be hosting our very first Mario Kart Tournament. This event, aimed at tweens and teens, will have lost of refreshment available, as well as board games for those wanting to do that instead. All of this will be in our beautiful Knibloe Room.
Saturday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m. – Snow Much Fun is a craft and game program for families and kids. There will be a brief story and then the hands-on fun begins.
Remember, we also have several ongoing programs throughout the month. Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., we have a fantastic preschool storytime and crafts that many people have said is one of the best in our library system. On Sundays from 1:30 - 4:30, we have Family Board Games available in the main library or in the Knibloe Room. You can bring your own or use one of our many games. We will be adding a LEGOS Time during the same period on Sundays starting in February. Stay tuned!
Finally, don’t forget that we have lots of things that help with school work, like Levelled Readers, Accelerated Readers and tons of online resources linked to the library’s website!
4. BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION - We are still collecting box tops. Each box top you send in is worth 10 cents to our school. Twice a year, Box Tops will send our school a check worth 10 cents for each Box top redeemed. The money earned goes to student assemblies, Cardinal Kudo prizes, awards, field trips, etc.

We will also have one on Saturday, March 7th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. during the basketball tournament and Tuesday, March 10th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. during the Math/Science Night.
