Penguin Press News
The Week of September 3rd
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME
Dear Laurel Park Families,
I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Labor Day weekend! Please take a moment to review a few updates and reminders below:
- Penguin Point Walkers - procedures and safety precautions are extremely important to our school staff. Please make sure that you meet your child at our silver penguin statue, otherwise known as Penguin Point. As much as we adore dogs, please do not bring them to Penguin Point. In addition, only 4th and 5th grade students can walk home without a parent accompanying them.
- We are in desperate need of size 6 and 8 clothing donations, including underpants (must be new) and socks. Please consider donating these items to our school closet.
- Do you have a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade student interested in signing up for Running Club?
The LPES Fall Running Club is open to Laurel Park students in Grades 3rd - 5th. The club meets in the gym hallway at 3:45 pm on designated Tuesdays and will transition to the field. Running Club participants should dress for the weather, wear tennis shoes, and bring a water bottle. Running Club lasts until 5:00 pm. Participants should be picked up in carpool or at the track by 5:00 pm, unless they are enrolled in the YMCA.
Dates:
September 11, 18, 25
October 2, 9, 23, 30
November 6, 13
***After registering your child for Running Club, please send a note/email to your child's classroom teacher, so she/he will send your child to Running Club on the following Tuesdays. (Sept.- 11, 18, 25 Oct.- 2, 9, 23, 30 & Nov. 6, 13)

Social Thinking Update
Hello! The fourth and fifth graders have been hard at working learning about teamwork and the idea of working together on a project. As we all know, a group project can be frustrating if not everyone is sharing the load. We worked on breaking down what teamwork looks like and sounds like and then tried a few group challenges. They tied in how other people matter so it can't just be one person's plan, it has to be a "group plan".
The 2nd and 3rd graders are also learning about the importance of sharing ideas, listening and working on something together. They made connections with our positvity project about what it means to show leadership and have an open-mind to new ideas. The Kindergarten and 1st graders have also been learning the about the concept of having your own plan versus having a group plan. Being part of a group means we have to be physically present but also get our brains involved too.
Here are some results:
Counselors' Corner September 2018
Counseling Intern
We are fortunate to have Ms. Nicki Lee back with us as our counseling intern during the 2018-19 school year! Ms. Lee is finishing up her Master of Education program in School Counseling at North Carolina State University. She also earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from NC State in May 2017 and completed her practicum with us during the spring semester of last school year. Nicki has experience mentoring students in Wake County Public Schools and working with children in an after-school program.
Having an intern provides additional resources for meeting the social-emotional needs of our students. Ms. Lee will be working with our school counselors, Mrs. MacEntee and Ms. Waddell, in various roles of support for Laurel Park students. Please contact either counselor if you would like additional information or are interested in having Ms. Lee work with your child. Thank you!
