What is the Value of teaching Financial Literacy?
Activities of the Cambria-Friesland School District
- Cambria-Friesland students are required to take a course in personal finance. It can be done in person or virtually.
The in person course description is: Do you plan to live on your own someday? In order to do so basic financial literacy skills are a must before being able to live on your own successfully. Students taking this course will gain the skills necessary to make wise financial decisions. A checkbook simulation will be completed. Topics will include money management and budgeting, borrowing, earning power, investing options, financial services, rent and buy, taxes and insurance. Other topics will also be financing a place to live, buying and insuring transportation, investing and the stock market.
The virtual/online course is offered through PLATO/Edmentum. The course description for Personal and Family Finance is: We all know money is important in life. But how important? In fact, the financial decisions you make today may have a lasting effect on your future. Rather than feeling anxious about money, feel empowered by learning how to make smart decisions! Personal and Family Finance will begin the conversation around how to spend and save your money wisely, investing in safe opportunities and the days ahead. Learning key financial concepts around taxes, credit, and money management will provide both understanding and confidence as you begin to navigate your own route to future security. Discover how education, career choices, and financial planning can lead you in the right direction to making your life simpler, steadier, and more enjoyable.
- Juniors will participate in a simulation, Test Drive Digital created by Royal Credit Union. In this simulation, students will watch a series of short videos on common expenses such as transportation, housing and entertainment. As students watch the videos, they will learn about each topic and then they will be given purchase options to choose from. The goal for this simulation is to see if the student can make it through one month with the lifestyle the student desires using the income from a selected career, assuming that student is 25 years old.
- Guest speakers from various institutions will present on topics throughout the year. This year the topics were: financial preparation, what it means to be 18, insurance options, and financing college.
