Social Emotional Learning
This year, Meadow Park Staff has started to engage in professional learning experiences designed to strengthen our knowledge around Social Emotional Learning. We are excited to expand our professional tool-belt to allow us to better understand, as well as meet, the emotional needs of students in our classrooms. In addition, it is critical that we design learning experiences
What is Social Emotional Learning?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. The Big 5 Framework that aligns skill building includes:
Self-awareness: Self-awareness is recognizing one’s emotions and thoughts and their influence on behavior. This includes accurately assessing one’s own strengths and limitations and biases, and possessing a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism and growth mindset.
Self-management: Self-management is regulating one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward personal and academic goals.
Social awareness: Social awareness is taking the perspective of and empathizing with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures, understanding social and ethical norms for behavior, and recognizing family, school, and community resources and supports.
Relationship skills: Relationship skills include establishing and maintaining healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This includes communicating clearly, listening actively, cooperating, resisting inappropriate social pressure, negotiating conflict constructively, and seeking and offering help when needed.
Responsible decision-making: Responsible decision-making is making constructive and respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on consideration of ethical standards, safety concerns, social norms, the realistic evaluation of consequences of various actions, and the well-being of self and others.
Using this framework is desirable because the Big 5 factors show consistent relationships with success at school, in the workforce, and are cross-culturally universal. The proceeds will go to help fund the 8th grade celebration. You can email the information to her by March 20th or drop it off in the main office and she can scan the picture in. Any questions, contact Tiffany Tran-Parta. You can pay online using this link or drop off the cash or check in the main office.
Help our PTO provide food for staff during conferences!
The Meadow Park PTO will be providing meals for our staff during teacher conferences later this month. Let’s give them a taste of the delicious foods our diverse student body enjoys at home by sharing your family’s favorite dishes with them at the International Recipes Dinner on Wednesday, February 26th. Sign-up here to bring a main dish, side dish, dessert, or snacks. Feel free to cook, provide store-bought items, or donate to the PTO for staff dinner. Questions? Contact Kimberly Hawk. Thanks in advance for supporting our Meadow Park staff!
