Digital Balance and Internet Safety Family Information Session

Did you know that Claxton is now recognized as a Common Sense School from Common Sense Education? We're proud of our teachers and students for growing digital citizens! If you are a CLX parent, join Claxton Digital Lead Teacher Kimberly Eggett to learn about Digital Balance and Internet Safety in a Claxton family information session on Thursday, Nov 8 at 4:30 and then dine and enjoy Supper with the Super at 5:30!

Supper with the Super

Join Dr. Patterson, Superintendent of Asheville City Schools, for Supper with the Super, held at Claxton, on Thursday, November 8th; dinner will be served from 5:30-6:30 PM. One of Dr. Patterson’s top priorities is meeting with parents and listening to as many students, staff and stakeholders as possible. Come discuss the latest topics impacting Asheville City Schools and share your ideas to support academic success for all students. All are welcome to attend!

Join Us for Family Fun at the Claxton Crafty!

The Claxton Crafty is coming up on Sat Nov 10 at the Salvage Station from 10am-5pm! We invite you to come out for family fun. It's a great chance to get an early start on holiday shopping and buy locally made gifts while also supporting our school. We have 21 talented vendors, ten of whom are part of our Claxton community (two teachers, two students and six parents)! We still have space for a few additional vendors so see the info below if you'd like to apply for a vendor spot.

We invite vendors and musicians to join in creating this great event. Proceeds from booth rental fees go directly to support Claxton Elementary School (and vendors keep 100% of their own sales). We're planning to host the event outside but our backup plan in case of rain or cold is to use the inside space at Salvage Station. The link to the application is below. Please complete the application and we'll be in touch with further details and vendor booth rental payment information. We are planning on having live music, again provided by talented members of our Claxton family and other community members. Mr. Butler, our music teacher, is helping to coordinate this. If you know anyone else (adult, child, professional, or novice) who may be interested in performing, please let us know. Thank you for your interest!

For more information, please contact Tricia Johnson at or 828-231-4078.

Thanks-for-Reading Lunch Invitation & Volunteer Opportunity

On Wed, November 14, Claxton will be hosting our annual Thanks-for-Reading Lunch. This event includes a Thanksgiving lunch and opportunity to visit your child's classroom to learn about their reading activities this year. If you'll be joining us for lunch, please send the event RSVP form back to Claxton by 11/9 to let us know to prepare a meal for you! Meals are $5 and can only be paid for at the door.

We also have two volunteer opportunities on this date--

1) We're looking for volunteers to staff our sign in tables in Claxton's lobby for hour-long slots between 10am and 1pm. Volunteers will help parents sign in, hand out name tags and help families find their way to students' classrooms.

2) Claxton will be hosting a one-day book fair with Firestorm Bookstore during school hours on Nov 14. Firestorm Bookstore will have staff present, but we're also looking for a few volunteers to help us in having a successful book fair!

To volunteer, please sign up online at

Bonus from AmazonSmile Today and Tomorrow (Nov 1 & 2)

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer!

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule.

All trainings are held in the Board Room at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

The full ACS Volunteer Training Schedule for 2018-2019 is linked here. Dates coming soon include--
