A Note from Dr. Brown
Greetings Parents and Guardians!
Happy Friday! I hope you had a great week! We are still having fun celebrating and recognizing National Hispanic Heritage month! Please ask your child(ren) to share some of the information, songs, and colors shared on the morning announcements. We will have a special guest reader soon. :-)
Please remember to read our District’s Blueprint and our Specific Woodward Mill Goals. Both links are below. We will use these goals to plan and measure our outcomes, both in how we provide guidance in the terms of being supportive in our community and in academics; all part of our Local School Improvement Plan (LSPI). Thanks for your support!
Remember to contact Ms. Hardin, PTA President, to volunteer for upcoming events. Bear Scare is right around the corner! If you have not done so already, please donate candy to help provide a wonderful experience for our students. :-)
Lastly, this week installation began on our security vestibule. This will be an extra layer of security for our students and staff. All GCPS schools will be retrofitted with this security measure. Visitors will still be asked to show ID to be buzzed into the building and into the glass vestibule. I am excited that we are able to provide another layer of protection for our school family. Thank you for partnering with us to make our school safe.
Best Regards and have a great weekend!
Dr. Sonya Brown
Principal

Positive Post-It Day(s)!
Positive Post-It Day is so great, we’re going to do it for 3 days! On Monday, students will write a positive, encouraging note to themselves. On Tuesday, they will write one to another student in their own class. Then on Wednesday, they will write one to a staff member in the building. We really challenge students to write notes to someone beyond just their best friend. This activity promotes inclusion for each and every student and counts toward our designation as a No Place For Hate School!
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Parent Night
The counseling department will host an SEL Parent Night via Zoom on November 1st at 5:30pm. Mark your calendars to learn more about this initiative at our school and what it means for your students!
Character Trait of the Month
Each month, we will focus on a different character trait. The character trait for the month of October is “Sharing”. When we talk with students about sharing, it goes beyond just sharing toys and “things”. We also want our students to share ideas respectfully with one another. Teachers will be looking for students that exhibit this trait during October to be recognized as the “Cub of the Month” with a certificate and free ice cream!
Spotlight on Hispanic Authors & Illustrators
Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal
Young Alma is learning to write her name, and what a name it is! Alma Sofia Esperanza José Pura Candela - try fitting that on a single line. When Alma asks her father why she has so many names, he responds by bringing to life the stories of Alma's ancestors, like her grandmother Sofia, who loved books, and her grandfather José, who made beautiful art. Alma learns her cultural roots through her namesakes, and comes to love every part of her name.
Beanstack
Our school-wide reading program will kick off in October! This year, we will be using the digital platform, Beanstack, to log reading minutes and participate in reading challenges. Our ultimate goal is to build a strong culture of reading at Woodward Mill. For many students, Beanstack is a familiar program, as it has been used for several years by the Gwinnett County Public Library to log summer reading minutes.
October will be a training month in the program, and we will focus on learning how to login and how to log reading minutes. Students will use their GCPS student number and their birthday month and date (MMDD) as their password. Students will be able to log reading minutes either on their laptop or on a mobile device.
We are excited about using Beanstack to support our community of readers.
