Dear Parents/Guardians,
You may have heard about the new Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, based on the book by Jay Asher. The show is about a young high school girl, Hannah, who takes her own life and sends out 13 cassette tapes to those whom she blames for her death. The series graphically depicts a suicide death and addresses in detail a number of difficult topics.
If your student has watched or is interested in watching 13 Reasons Why, we encourage you to have an honest conversation with them about the serious themes portrayed in the show. The National Association of School Psychologist has offered helpful guidance in response to the Netflix series. The link below includes guidance for families along with additional resources to help parents talk with their students about this topic.
As a community, it is important to know that, there are many treatment options for life challenges, distress and mental illness. The counseling staff in every school is trained to assist with any mental health concerns and connections to community partnerships.
I encourage you to talk to your student and use the resources listed below.

Fun Facts - The American Flag
"The American flag, as it flies today with 50 stars and 13 stripes, was designed in 1958 by 17-year-old high school student, Robert G. Heft, of Lancaster, Ohio. While his teacher only awarded Heft a B- for the project, President Dwight D. Eisenhower chose his design out of 1,500 entries. Thankfully, Heft’s teacher made good on her promise to raise his grade in the unlikely event that his design won the contest." SOURCE
