Seekonk students participate in refugee symposium at UMass Boston!
On Tuesday, April 4th, Mrs. Hellmold, Ms. Jones, and Mrs. Pomfret took 13 students to UMASS Boston for a Youth to Youth Symposium hosted by the Joiner Institute for the Study of War and Social Consequences on the topic of War and the Refugee Experience. This symposium was part of Seekonk High School’s collaboration with the Joiner Institute that began last year with the Art and English departments’ work with Iranian artist Minoo Imami. As a result of the positive student response to that project, we have continued to embrace opportunities to continue our work with the Institute. For this symposium SHS students, along with students from two Boston high schools, met refugees from Somalia, Uganda, and Syria. After a brief introduction by each, and a lunch provided by the Joiner Institute, students were broken into three discussion groups. These groups provided students with the chance to ask questions and hear the very real and personal stories of these three amazing individuals. Later, there was a presentation by Oxfam and “Next Steps” were discussed. SHS students were a credit to our community. Their clear engagement and thoughtfulness was evidenced by the questions they asked and their ideas and excitement for how to bring their experience to the broader Seekonk High School community.

Weekly Message...
This weekly message is about the upcoming week at Seekonk High School. The group, Students Promoting Equality and Kindness (S.P.E.A.K.) has planned an anti-bullying week. Take a listen and learn a little more about deciding to like yourself more instead of disliking others to feel better. Its all a matter of focusing on improving who you are through purposeful actions rather than taking the easy, low character road and only improving the image of who you wish you were. Life is a journey, be the type of person you would want taking it with you.
Around School..
Guidance - Mrs. Whatley
Parents of grade 9, 10, 11 students- Have you signed the course request sheet for next year? If not, please ask your student to see their course request sheet for next year. They were due today, April 7th, signed by a parent to the guidance office. Students should also log in to their student Plusportal account and submit their course requests. Please ask them if that has happened.
Thank you.
Third Quarter report cards were distributed to each student last period today. An electronic copy of the report card has also been uploaded into the Plusportal accounts. To view the report card electronically, log in to your parent Plusportal account, select e-locker in the tool bar then click on the 'portfolio' tab. I hope that you and your student are please and proud of what you see.
