By Click or By Brick ~ Building Dreams Together
WE DID IT! Week one of remote/continuous online learning completed. We are grateful for your GRACE and PATIENCE as we have worked through this week together. It has been challenging at times and along the way we have had BIG CELEBRATIONS! It is a pleasure to work through the technology pieces to bring Hills Lightning Bolt learning into your homes.
This year, whether we learn "By the Click" of the computer or within "the Brick" of the building, we are building the future and dreams of our students together. Ivan Welton Fitzwater is quoted as saying, 'The Future of the World is in My Classroom Today." Our Lightning Bolts will continue to receive high quality instruction that will help them build the pathway to their dreams and aspirations through their participation in the Hills virtual or in-person classrooms.
We are also here to support you - families and students with this unique year. Another quote that comes to mind, "When educating students, we must not forget to educate their hearts," Dalai Lama. If there are resources or guidance needed, please reach out to us, as we will do our best to connect you to resources and assist in anyway we can.
We are "ICCSDTogether, DoingThisTogether, and BoltBrave." Thank you for your partnership in this journey.

Technology Tips for Daily Log In
You can access your student's daily schedule in one of two ways:
1. From the link provided in an email by your student's classroom teacher
2. Via Seesaw (From the Clever Dashboard, scroll down to the Seesaw app and open Seesaw).
For Online Learning Program students, your Weekly Schedule will be in the Weekly Schedule folder of your Online Learning Program class in Seesaw. Click on the folder icon on the right side of your screen next to Journal, and then select the Weekly Schedule folder.
For Standard Enrollment Students (currently online and may move to Hybrid), your Weekly schedule will be in your EL Home Seesaw class. Click on your name in the upper left hand corner, select EL Home. The Weekly Schedule will likely appear right away. If it does not, click on the folder icon next to "Journal" on the right hand side and select "Weekly Schedule".
The schedule might appear verry small and it has the links. You can enlarge the schedule with the magnifying glass. When you place the arrow by the link, blue letters will appear below it. Move the arrow to those letters and it will open the link.
As a reminder, there is a technology guide in the Bolt Binder under the "Technology" tab with step-by-step directions for accessing Clever, Seesaw, Zoom, and other programs.

Bolt Binders - Keep Handy!
The Bolt Binder is a white binder with a lightning bolt on the front. This contains many IMPORTANT and HELPFUL pieces of information related to technology, school information and schedules. It was provided to all students at material pick up. Please keep this with your Chromebook and text books so that you have all the materials you need.
Create An At-Home Learning Space
It is really important to maintain a schedule and learning space for your child while they do online learning. Regular routine of getting up, eating breakfast, getting dressed, brushing teeth and hair, and setting up for a day of learning helps keep the mind engaged. A well-light space set up with your child's visual schedule, a chair, a clock, and all the materials will help build successful learning exoeriences at home.
Your student and you will receive the weekly schedule in email and Seesaw. The schedule with the zoom links will be posted by 4:00 PM on Fridays for the next week. By Sunday at 4:00 PM, all learning activities will be posted with the targeted date for the next week. EVERY day, your child has at least two small groups and a morning meeting with the classroom teacher that they are required to attend. Additionally, they have a special (Guidance, Library, Music, PE or Art) they are required to attend. These are synchronous (live activities that need the zoom link). Other activites posted are asynchronous (video recordings that need to be watched in reading, math, health, science and social studies).

Create An At-Home Learning Space
Attendance is taken for every synchronous (live teacher via zoom link) session. It is so important that your child is present for each session - every day. This week we have all learned the procedures for accessing on-line learning; if you need assistance, please reach out to us at 319-688-1105. Attendance requirements continue to apply as this learning is required by the Iowa Department of Education. We ask for your ongoing communication, as we can see and monitor student attempts students make to enter a session.
If you have a Gogle Home device or something similar, you may be able to set-up at home schedules to assist your children with their daily tasks. Here is a link that may help you: https://support.google.com/assistant/answer/10011399?co=GENIE.Platform=Android&hl=en
Orchestra and Band
Yes! This will still happen this year. 5th and 6th grade students that are interested, please watch for a video. A special session will occur on Thursday, September 17th at 1:45 PM.
As we have begun the school year in a 100% off-site learning model, there is lunch support available to ALL. The Grab & Go meal program to provide breakfast and lunch to District students is continuing.
The Grab & Go meal sites are outlined below. Meals are served from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Each meal includes breakfast and lunch. Menu information can be found at MealViewer, under the Grab & Go menu. Meals are free and available to all Iowa City Community School District students and children do not need to be present in order for a guardian to pick-up a meal for the child.
Grab & Go meal sites beginning September 8, 2020:
City High School
Hills Elementary School
Liberty High School
North Central Junior High School
Northwest Junior High School
South East Junior High School
West High School
We are excited to announce that the USDA has extended our waiver allowing us to continue to offer free meals to all students. The waiver has been extended through December 2020. While meals are currently free for all students through December under this waiver, it is critical that families still complete the Free and Reduced Lunch application since meals may not be free beginning in January 2021. The District provides free and reduced meals to families that qualify; however, you must fill out an application each year as federal income guidelines change. Please be aware that even if you applied last year, you need to reapply by September 30, 2020, to prevent a potential loss in benefits. If you have already filled out an application or have received a benefits notification from the District’s Nutrition Services Department for this year, NO additional action is necessary. Please contact the Nutrition Services Office at (319) 688-1021 if you have any questions about your student’s meal status or if you are unsure about whether an application is needed at this time.
