Update from the Horizon Butterfly Garden by Amy Lewis, Third Grade Teacher
Students have been enjoying finding and observing all of the caterpillars in our butterfly garden. We have some very hungry monarch caterpillars!
In fact, they are so hungry that they have eaten almost every single leaf on the biggest milkweed plants in our garden. Milkweeds are the only plant that monarch caterpillars can eat during that phase in their lifecycle. That is why you can see a few different varieties of milkweeds planted in the garden.
Our garden is an official monarch waystation number 13,561 registered with monarchwatch.org and the University of Kansas. Monarch butterfly numbers have been at an all-time low due to pesticides and a shortage of milkweed, severe hurricanes during monarch migration and unseasonably warm fall weather.
If you would like to help monarch butterflies, please consider planting some milkweed plants in pots outside your home.
