Recycling Wastewater in LA: How and Why
Recycling Wastewater in LA: How and Why
Wastewater is “dirty” water that leaves our homes, schools and offices, or factories to go to a waste water treatment plant. Traditionnally, treated water is released in the local environment like in the ocean or in rivers. As our drought intensifies and our population grows in LA, we need to reuse this treated water instead of discarding it.
Wastewater reclamation (or recycling) is a strategy to use highly advanced treatment technologies to purify wastewater so that it can be beneficially reused and thus reduce our dependence on imported water. While technologies can differ to some extent, wastewater reclamation usually consists of microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet light.
Check out this detailed article from LA Waterkeeper on what does LA's current wastewater system look like.
