What's a Makerspace?
A makerspace is a community space where people come together to make, build, develop, design, experiment, share, communicate, demonstrate, discover, collaborate, produce, fix and problem-solve. The idea is to give our students a chance to independently explore their interests, think critically and make new connections. Our makerspace will utilize experts from within our school and across the globe. Makerspaces bring together people who are inventors, DIYers and people who just love to create. It's a place for everyone!
Getting Started!
Student interest is at the center of the planning. I've met with 2 classes of high school students who are very excited for the makerspace. Students volunteered to help set up the space and host sessions during the day or after school. I will be working with these students to make a plan for facilitating the space and getting more students involved. Students have shared their ideas for the kinds of activities, equipment and software that we need. Middle school students are being surveyed in the next couple of weeks to get feedback about their interests and talents! The space will be available to students throughout the day to problem-solve, design and create.
What will students do in the Makerspace?
The list of possibilities is endless. Students have expressed interest in the following: electronics, programming, graphic design, animation, robotics, video production, app design podcasting, make how-to videos, 3D printing, paper crafts, sewing, recycled crafts, jewelry making, fly-tying.... Our students have a lot of interests!
Where is this Happening?
The makerspace will be in the library and Lab A. We are working on making the library space more flexible and accommodating for students and classroom instruction. We are also re-purposing the TV storage area and the magazine/DVD storage area for an arts/craft supply closet and green screen/video production space.

Makerspace Resources
Join the School Library Makerspace Community!
I started a community on G+ where anyone can share what they are doing in their school makerspaces. Making connections to other school communities is important in building a successful program for our students. It would be great to have you there too!
