District Communication - Butler Reopening Plan - Scheduled 10/26

Yesterday evening, the District outlined details about plans for returning to in-person schooling for our Traditional and Hybrid students. Of note, Butler's opening is delayed from that of the rest of the District schools due to our HVAC Construction Project. The statewide shutdown in March and April 2020 required adjustments to be made for work to resume. The schedule for work completion remains on-schedule for an October 23rd completion. This will result in an October 26th in-person return for students.

In some instances, work continues during the day, but the majority of the crews have been working second shift (PM hours) since August 31st. This has allowed our teachers in school to conduct virtual learning uninterrupted. Large portions of the building remain unfinished (as a result of the delay). For those who teach from these locations, teachers are instructing from home - utilizing the same technology as their in-school colleagues. Additionally, all teachers remain in contact with their grade-level partners and plan cooperatively in preparation for each day.

While this has certainly caused our office and facility staff to adjust how we conducted our typical preparations over the course of the summer and start of school, we continue the work necessary to best support our teachers as they prepare each day with students. We look forward to our return to school and will provide further updates in the coming weeks.

Student Emergency and Information Form

“It is time to update your children’s “Student Emergency & Information Form.” This must be done each year. The process will take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and will ensure we have current contact information for you and your family, which is even more critical as we begin the school year virtually. All CBSD families (with the exception of those who are new registrants for 2020-2021) are required to complete this update on/before September 30, 2020.

The online form will ask you to confirm and/or update the following:

· Demographic Information

· Emergency Contacts

· Health Information, including permission for emergency care and analgesic administration

· Media Release Preferences

Visit the CBSD Infinite Campus parent portal at and don’t forget to hit submit at the end. You will receive an email verifying that your submission was received. Thank you!

Attendance Expectations

Students are expected to be logged on virtually daily and present for daily instruction - both synchronous (LIVE) and asynchronous instruction. In the coming days, teachers will communicate a daily schedule. Children will be expected to attend all elements of the school day, unless they have an excused absence (i.e. illness, appointment). It is important to understand that attendance is mandatory for all students per the compulsory attendance laws of Pennsylvania. Attendance will be taken each school day. Students that are not logged on at the start of class will be marked absent or tardy if they arrive late to their virtual class.

If your child will not be able to attend school virtually, parents need to email Email is strongly preferred but if you are unable to email the school, please call the school attendance line at 267-893-4. PLEASE DO NOT SEND WRITTEN NOTES UNLESS IT IS FROM A PHYSICIAN. Students must be in school or logged on before 10:30 AM in order to get credit for the day.

If a student needs to leave classes before 2:00 PM, they should email our secretary, Judie Pereira, or call the main office - 267-893-4250.

School Happenings

First Day of (Virtual) School

We cannot wait to have our students back at Butler! But like in all of our CB Schools, Butler started our first week of school teaching virtually on September 8th. Our school is in a unique circumstance as the building is still under construction for the HVAC Project - and many rooms are still needing to be completed before teachers can occupy. As a result, more than half of our teachers began teaching from home - working in their "home offices" as they connected with their new students K-6. Those whose rooms were ready, opened their year teaching from school. Technology worked well and feedback was positive from those families who shared with the school.

Back to School Nights

Butler's Back to School Nights began this week! Grades 1 & 2 opened the series of events on Monday, 9/14, with a virtual meeting for families. Introductions and welcomings were provided by Mr. Funseth, Mr. Brosious and our Student Support Teams in advance of the evening (see below) - with teachers facilitating the evening's presentation and LIVE Q&A. Despite not being there in-person, our hope is you each have a good understanding of the curriculum, expectations - as well as an introduction to your child's teacher! For upcoming meetings, remember to refer back to your teacher's BTSN email with the timing and proper links to access.

Listed again here, please review our Welcome Messages from Mr. Funseth, Mr. Brosious and our Student Support Counselors.

Technology & Materials Distribution Days

The Butler staff successfully coordinated technology and material distribution for all the families of our Community over the last two weeks. Prior to the start of school, two-days were held to distribute devices for every student K-6 - where families picked-up their 1:1 device for their children. Then again, material pick-ups were held this week, staging three-days for parents to retrieve as staff worked around the Butler Construction schedule in anticipation of live instruction next week. The effort of our support staff and office personnel was simply incredible as we coordinated around Butler's hectic building schedule.

Butler Community "Welcoming" our Teachers and Staff Back to School!

The support shown by the Butler community has been incredible. Waiting for us on our first day were inspirational drawings and messages from our students and families. The messages encouraged our teachers to be their best and how much the children miss seeing them each day. Butler Community truly showed their support for our teachers and staff!

Families Surprise Our Teachers with a Parade!

At the conclusion of the first "Staff Development" week, teachers were asked to join the principals around our front circle for a quick message before lunch break. From around the corner came vehicle after vehicle of Butler Families parading with honking horns and friendly signs wishing us all the best for an amazing start and wonderful year. Our elementary teachers were emotionally charged from this act of kindness (coordinated by our PTO) and it provided each of us the energy to continue to work through these daily obstacles we face. It surely was a highlight for all of our Butler staff!

Butler's Construction Update

HVAC Construction Update

Butler's Construction Project has now moved to second shift as they begin completion of the project. Work is focused on all corridors, second and sixth grade classrooms, gymnasium/cafeteria/stage and kitchen. The coordination of contractors, while having its challenges, has been successful. Butler remains on schedule for an October 23rd completion. All of Butler is certainly looking forward to that date as we continue to prepare our school for students and to enjoy the new air system at Butler!
