5Essentials: You Know You Want To
All the cool kids are taking it.
Taking the survey will make you younger, smarter and more attractive.
Your mother called and said you should take the 5Essentials survey.
Well. Maybe. Or not. But the survey will be used to ensure that your school is the best it can be for teachers and students. We will review that data. Please check your inbox for the survey from UChicago Impact, and take a few minutes to give your input before February 15.
Remember, this survey is for classroom teachers and other teaching staff whose primary responsibility is direct daily contact with students.

I Spy Vision Benefits
I see! There are vision benefits associated with the District’s BlueCross BlueShield Medical plan!
If you are a participant of the District's BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois medical plan, there are vision benefits available to you! Our medical plan has a vision rider that allows for low cost vision services when using an EyeMed Advantage vision provider for HMO members, and reimbursement for vision services for PPO members, when using any provider.
If you are enrolled in either of the D34 medical plans, check out the benefits available to you through our Vision Rider:
If you are enrolled in the district’s PPO medical plan, and are using an EyeMed Advantage provider, you are eligible for these discounts, as well.

Remind Verizon: #ReverseTheFee #NotSpam
If you use Remind to communicate with parents, monitor the situation over the next few days. If Verizon does impose the fee, parents will no longer receive text notifications when you send out communication, so you will want to let parents know. Encourage them to download the Remind app from the App Store or Google Play so they can continue to get important information from you. They will receive text messages until January 28.
Stay tuned! Like a Netflix drama, the next season will drop soon!
Learning Spaces Update, Invitation and Survey!
This year, we are testing 6 redesigned classrooms across the district to move towards this learning spaces vision: “D34 Learning Spaces will evolve to be adaptable and functional, inviting and comfortable, learner and learning centered.” To learn more about this vision click here. In addition to changing the space, the teachers involved are making instructional shifts by giving students more voice and choice in the classroom, and incorporating more inquiry based teaching and learning.
This is your official invitation to stop in any of these classrooms to take a look at the space, observe students, ask questions, and learn more. We have an open door policy, and want to learn together!
HE ROOM 15 - Jenny Levin
LY ROOM 21 - Matt Vogel
WB ROOM 14 - Mandy Freer
HO ROOM 18 - Kris Lacivita
PR ROOM 314 - Mandy Kirsch
GG ROOM 146 - Katie Dahmer
Look for additional information about what we are learning, and what you might try in your space in future “ What’s News?” editions. For now, take this quick survey to reflect on your own learning space and help us see which areas we should share more about.
This section is where we highlight all of the wonderful things going on in the district, schools, and classrooms. If you have items to share or would like an event covered, please fill out the Staff Shares Request Form.
Don't want to write something up, but you want to share? Fill out that form! Or, even easier, email Cathy Kedjidjian and she'll be excited to come to your classroom and share your story!
Pajama Drive
I believe it's important to instill community service in my students, and thought this was a great opportunity for them to help out others in need. It also tied in nicely with our social studies unit. We were learning about needs, wants, and how to make a budget; that when creating your budget you have to spend money first on needs, then put money into savings, then on charity, and finally, any leftover money can be spent on wants. Our Pajama Drive tied in so nicely to our unit that a couple of my students even used their own allowances to buy the pajamas that they donated!!
My second graders set a goal of raising 23 pairs of pajamas (at the time, I had 19 students in my class, and they felt that 23 was a fair number to try and collect). Well, they had a two week deadline, and in those two weeks, we collected 27 pairs of pajamas!

EC Community Helper: Blue the Dog
For the early childhood community helpers visit in January for we had Blue the therapy dog come in and meet the preschoolers. Blue is a 190 pound Great Dane who is deaf. His handler, Phil, showed the students how he is able to still communicate with Blue even though he’s different than other dogs.
Students were taught how to approach an unfamiliar dog in a safe way. And then, the highlight, the students were able to go up to Blue and pet him and practice greeting a dog! It was a great learning experience where students were able to learn more about therapy dogs as well as safety greet unfamiliar dogs
Comfort dogs will soon be stopping by EC as a continuation of our monthly community helper program.

Math Centers
Teamwork is the name and STEM Stations & math centers are the ‘game’ at Henking. Mrs. Hagist’s Bilingual 1st/2nd graders along with Mrs. Koob/Mrs. Halperin’s 1st graders have been collaborating and problem-solving together working on developing their learning dispositions through the lense of math centers and STEM Stations with the support of the Tech and LRC Director’s, Rachel Davidson & Caryl Doetsch.
Students from both classes have been rotating in small groups through different challenges that encourages the students to utilize their Maker Mindsets and problem-solving skills. They have begun to realize that two (or more) minds are better than one when it comes to being creative, collaborative critical thinkers
