NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 13TH
This past week we completed testing in kindergarten and first grade along with some other smaller screenings in second and third grade. We utilized this information during our professional development day on Friday to discuss the needs and support for our individual students. Some of our students moved out of the Reading Improvement Act as an identified student needing additional reading support. Thank you to the parents who work with your child(ren) at home in reading and math. We clearly do not have enough time during the day to reinforce all of the necessary skills and practice that it takes to move our students to grade level and above without your support. The time we all put in now will be time saved in the future!
This week we will continue to finish up on testing. As a reminder, school will get out two hours early this Friday, December 18th. Since this is a shortened day, we have revamped our specials schedule to twenty minutes and on the "off time" students will play BINGO for a chance to win a fun holiday prize. All students will receive a holiday pencil from Mrs. Clevenger as a gift.
Another friendly reminder, the district has decided to give students an extended holiday break by not having them attend school on Monday and Tuesday, December 21st and 22nd. On behalf of the Kenwood Elementary staff, we wish you a happy holiday break! Be positive, be safe, and stay healthy!

NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 6TH
I have so many moments from this week to be proud of that I'd like to share with you. First of all, students in grades 2 through 5 took their time on their winter MAP tests in reading and math. I'm impressed with their positive self-talk and preparedness. Also, our Feed the Community Food Drive went phenomenally well! As of Thursday, Mrs. Gillaspy reported that our students overwhelmingly surpassed the last two year's goal of 1000 cans/food items for this drive. I can't wait to hear the grand total tomorrow at school. Thank you so much for helping our students learn the gift of giving and helping to support others. This gift of giving definitely helped our students feel pride in how they could help others.
This upcoming week, we will be testing students mostly in grades kindergarten through third grade. Please give your child a nice "pep talk" each morning next week.
The Bearcat Diner wants to send a friendly reminder that free meals do not include a milk with a cold lunch brought from home or an extra milk with a meal. Milk will be charged $.45 to their accounts so the children will need money in their accounts to be able to get them at lunch.
Reminder: No school on Friday, December 11th. Friday

Kenwood Selected for Hy-Vee Reusable Bag Program
Dear Kenwood Elementary,
We are so excited to share that Kenwood PTO has been selected to be a part of the Hy-Vee Reusable Bag program that supports local non-profits, which is designed to make it easy for customers to contribute to their local community while supporting the environment. For the month of December, each time a $2.50 red "My Heart" Reusable Bag is purchased at the Hy-Vee located at 5212 3rd Avenue, $1 will be donated to Kenwood PTO. This is a great way to raise awareness, support the environment and fundraise for our cause. Let’s get started! We can begin by spreading the news to our friends and family. Call, send emails, and post on social media. The more people who learn about the program and purchase the $2.50 red "My Heart" Reusable Bag during the month of December, the more money we will raise. To learn more about this program, please visit hy-vee.bags4mycause.com.
Best, Kenwood PTO fundraising Committee

NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 29th
This week we will begin winter testing to determine student learning. Being at school has been the biggest blessing and our students have been fortunate to continue their learning even under these trying and different circumstances. They continue to amaze me. Testing begins Wednesday and Thursday with grades 2 through 5 MAP Reading and Math tests. Please cheer your child on to just do their very best. Testing can be overwhelming for some students. To help them with anxiety and stress, have them practice positive self-talk. The more they hear this, the better they will feel.
- "I can do this."
- "I'll do my best."
- "I am smart, confident, and capable."
- "I am doing great."
This week our Fuel Up to Play 60 is planning a Feed Your Community Food Drive. Donations will go to the Salvation Army to assist in supplying Christmas dinner packages and to the Jubilee Center’s food pantry. Classes will get one entry per item donated to be put into a drawing for two EXTRA PE times to be had the week before our December holiday break. Students can bring food items to their classrooms. Thank you in advance for helping our students learn the importance of helping others.
