Schweitzer ES Title I Newsletter
December 2020
Dear Schweitzer Families,
This is the first of three issues of the Title I Newsletter for the 2020-21 school year. It is published to keep you up to date and informed about what is happening in Title I. This issue is dedicated to familiarizing families with the nuts and bolts of Title I. The buttons at the end of the newsletter are linked to our Handbook of Program Policies, the Parent & Family Engagement Survey as well as other important parent forms.
Sincerely,
Ms. Maurizi
Title I Reading Specialist & Coordinator
What is Title I?
Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides financial assistance to school districts and schools with high percentages of children from families that may have various disadvantages. The federal funding is used to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. Federal funds are currently allocated through four statutory formulas that are based primarily on census poverty estimates and the cost of education in each state. Title I is the largest of the federally funded education programs.
Albert Schweitzer Elementary School is a Schoolwide Title I school. As such, our Title I funds and services can provide comprehensive strategies for improving the entire school so that every student achieves high levels of academic proficiency. Listed below are some of the benefits to being a Schoolwide Title I school:
- All students may participate in Title I funded initiatives
- Maximizes flexibility in using Federal funds
- Serves as a vehicle for whole-school reform with focus on improving achievement of lowest- achieving students.
- Addresses student needs through a Schoolwide plan based on a comprehensive needs assessment.
How Parents Can Get Involved in Title I
Parents are notified about Title I services and encouraged to participate in school activities/meetings. Families may participate in informational meetings and learning opportunities throughout the school year. Parents are provided information via newsletters, conferences, school web pages, meetings and workshops.
Federal Programs & Title I Annual Meeting
A sincere thank you the parents and guardians that attended the virtual Federal Programs Overview , Albert Schweitzer Elementary School Title I Annual Meeting and Parent Advisory Council Meeting on Thursday, October 29th. In order to accommodate busy schedules, we offered two times this year. Parents that attended had the opportunity to learn about NSD Federal Programs, the Schweitzer Title I program and participate in Parent Advisory functions in the review and revision of the Schweitzer Title I Parent & Family Engagement Policy as well as the Home-School Compact.
What is the Parent & Family Engagement Policy?
One of the goals of Title I is to encourage parent and family engagement. The school Parent and Family Engagement Policy is a plan for the year that is jointly developed with parents. The Title I Parent and Family Engagement section of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), requires each Title I school to develop a written parent and family engagement policy that describes the means for carrying out the requirements of Title I.
What is a Home-School Compact?
A Home-School Compact serves as an agreement that effectively and meaningfully explains how families, students and the school can partner together to support the grade-level academic success of each and every student. The development of the partnership between families, schools and students is the emphasis and real purpose of the compact.
Family participation in the development of this compact is valuable and essential. The only way for the home-school compact to have meaningful impact is to ensure that you, the families and caregivers, understand how your collaboration with the school will benefit student success.
Schweitzer Parent Resource Center
The Parent Resource Room (PRC) is a room where Schweitzer parents can come between 10 am - 2 pm each school day to research and sign up for a number of educational and community resources. The center includes a lending library of materials, computer access and other support for a variety of services. It is designed to ensure the academic and social-emotional well-being of every student at Albert Schweitzer Elementary by providing a center for accessing those programs and help.
Due to physical distancing, parents are invited to make an appointment to visit and use the PRC.
