August Newsletter

Big picture

Cougar Greetings,

As we bring a close to the first week of school, I would like to share how proud I am of how students have conducted themselves. I’ve witnessed students holding the door for others, sitting with new students at lunch and getting to class on time when they were not lost or confused (insert smile here).

Please remember that there are important tools to assist you with your child’s success at school:

~ParentVue is an online program which allows you to monitor your child’s grades, homework, missing assignments, test scores, report cards, and attendance. The program is updated automatically, so you always have access to the most current information. Please make ParentVue your new best friend.

~All students were issued a student chromebook. We would like to ask for your support in making sure it is charged every night and becomes routine. We are also asking students to have a set of earbuds.

Benchmark Testing

Each year, schools in the district assess the success of the learning that has taken place within ELA (reading/writing) and Mathematics through Illuminate. This is a new platform that replaced Galileo. The results of these tests are used for evaluative purposes of the students, teachers, middle school, and district. We will begin testing next week.

Schedule Changes

In order to balance classes, additional sections in 7th grade Math, Social Studies, ELA and Science will begin the week of August 9th. An additional section of photography was also added. This means your child's schedule could be subject to change. Schedule changes are made at random. We have openings in Music and in honors classes, so if you believe your student could benefit from being challenged in honors courses, please reach out to our counseling team.

WIN Time (What I Need)

As you may have noticed, this year class schedule times have changed. This change was made to meet the needs of our students. In the next two weeks, we will identify students who need additional time and support with math. This means, if your child is identified as needing WIN time, they will exchange an elective for 7 weeks to get this support. The following 9 weeks will focus on ELA.

Our staff is committed to the success of our students. This means we will be unapologetic in holding students accountable for high expectations. I want to personally thank you choosing Combs Middle School and we look forward to partnering with you in your child's education. Now, let's go make some awesome Middle School memories and then buy the yearbook.
