Week of February 1, 2021 Newsletter
Monday February 1st and Wednesday February 3rd will be asynchronous learning days for all FPS students. It is expected that all students log on to their classroom's Google Meet for a Morning Meeting at the start of the school day where teachers will take attendance and review the independent assignments that students will complete that day.
Tuesday February 2nd will be a SNOW DAY! There will be no school on Tuesday and this day will be made up in June. Food distribution sites will be closed Tuesday. Families should pick up multiple meals on Monday.
Teachers will be returning to the buildings starting this week and will be setting up their classrooms during these asynchronous learning days to prepare for the upcoming start of the hybrid model. FPS has not yet announced the date when students in phase 3 and phase 4 will be returning to the buildings for the hybrid model, but in this latest FPS Return to School Update the district announced that this will happen once pooled testing can begin in the schools sometime after February vacation. We will update Wilson families as soon as we have more information from the district about the return to the building for our students in the hybrid model.

February Character Traits
Caring
IB defines caring as:
We show empathy, compassion and respect.
We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.
Book of the Month
Compassion in Action
Compassion means showing empathy for other people and considering how they feel.
Participate in our "Caring and Compassion Challenge"
Throughout the month of February, all students in Framingham Public Schools will be learning about the FPS character trait of the month: Compassion. At our IB World School, we are also learning about the IB Learner Profile attribute: Caring. We believe in caring for each other and for the world!
We encourage all students, families, and staff to participate in our school-wide "Caring and Compassion Challenge" during the month of February! Let's all reflect on how we can take action in small and big ways each day to spread kindness, to show others that we care for them, and to help the world. It is so important now more than ever to be caring and compassionate!
In all K-5 classes during the first week of February, students will listen to stories and discuss examples of how we can take action to be caring and compassionate. You can watch and discuss these videos and examples on this slideshow with your children too.
Let's recognize and celebrate when we notice acts of caring and compassion by posting photos and examples on this school-wide Padlet website throughout the month of February. You can share examples of how YOU were caring OR you can thank someone for being caring to you! To post on the website, scroll left to right with the scroll bar on the bottom and click on the + sign under your child's grade level to start a new post where you can type and attach a photograph if you want! If you need help with posting an example, you can send your child's teacher a message or email Ms Resnick at kresnick@framingham.k12.ma.us
We look forward to celebrating all the ways that our school community is caring and compassionate!

Students brainstorm possible new names for our school
Last month during Library and Portuguese classes, students learned that our school will be changing our name because we do not support President Woodrow Wilson’s racist beliefs and we want a new name that supports our school’s values of social justice. Students in grades 3-5 will be brainstorming ideas for possible new names for our school this week, considering our criteria for a new name for our school.
Criteria to consider for the new name for our school:
Our school’s name SHOULD:
Represent our beliefs and values as an IB World School
Support Social Justice
Our school’s name CAN:
Be named after an important person, place, historical event, organization, or idea
Be a name connected to our city, state, country, or the world
Our school’s name WON’T:
Be named after anyone who works at our school or in Framingham
Be named after anyone who is racist or who treats people unfairly
Students are encouraged to talk to their families about ideas for a new name for our school and to explore various online resources for inspiration while brainstorming ideas. Some websites that may be helpful to explore include the Framingham Historical Center’s biography website with famous people from Framingham, this website of Social Justice activist biographies, biographies on the Epic website, and biographies in Portuguese on the Britannica Escola database. Although many students may choose to research famous people to inspire a new name for our school, we will also consider names that could be related to our location, historical events, organizations, or ideas. This week in Library and Portuguese class, students will submit possible name ideas on this Google Form and then they will choose their favorite name idea to research more over the next few weeks.
Please continue to ask your children to share with you what they are learning about in their Library and Portuguese class about the renaming of Woodrow Wilson School. This renaming process will take many months to include the perspectives of the whole school community and Framingham community before the Framingham School Committee makes the final decision. Click here to read our previous weekly updates about this renaming process. Thank you for your support and please reach out to the school if you have any questions.
Read to a Child program begins!
We are excited to announce that Read to a Child* is back at the Wilson School virtually! Students and mentors began our Read Aloud Mentoring Program this week and it will run on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays during lunchtime. Students in the program should log on from their Google Classroom at their assigned day and time. Happy Reading! *Read to a Child is for current students in grades 2-4 and is not able to accept new students for this school year.
