Reading Workshop
This week, we will read about schools in other parts of the world and we will explore the question, “Why do authors write different kinds of texts?” In the informational text, "Schools Around the World", we will learn about the ways in which schools in other parts of the world are the same or different. We will also read a selection of poems about school in School Poems.
Target Vocabulary: culture, community, languages, transportation, subjects, lessons, special, wear
Phonics Skills: Vowel digraphs ee, ea (long e sound)
Vocabulary Strategy: Using a dictionary
Comprehension Skill: Author’s purpose – tell why an author writes a book
Comprehension Strategy: Analyze/evaluate – tell how you feel about the text and why
During mini-lessons, students will be introduced to each of the skills above and and apply them to various activities. In addition, they will revisit the literary elements of idioms and homophones.
Writing Workshop
During handwriting, the students will work focus on punctuation. The rules for quotation marks will be introduced and they will have an opportunity to practice writing in their books. In addition, commas and ending punctuation will be reviewed.
Our writing focus will return to Personal Narrative once again. We will begin by concentrating on beginnings or leads. The students will learn that a good lead makes their reader want to follow the story and that strengthens their stories. They will be introduced to various ways writers make a positive or memorable first impression; using dialogue, describing an action, asking a question, telling a thought, expressing a thought or feeling, and using onomatopoeia or sound effect. Each one can be used as a lead to catch their reader.
