Illinois 5Essentials Survey

Dear Lyon & Pleasant Ridge Families,

A new calendar year brings a renewed energy and focus, and we are excited about the work ahead of us during the remainder of this current school year. A critical aspect of our work at school is our relationship with you. We are extremely grateful for the supportive family community in our Lyon/Pleasant Ridge school cluster. We value the partnership that we have formed with you, and we regularly seek feedback that will help us improve in the important work in which we are engaged together.

At the present time, parents have a unique opportunity to provide feedback to both of our schools through the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. The results of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey contribute to a detailed picture of our schools’ climate and culture, and we will use this information to help create the most effective environment for student growth, well-being and success. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness. But, the state will provide reports only to schools who have at least a 20% parent response rate.

Please complete the survey today for each school where you have a student enrolled. The survey is not long and should only take about 10 minutes to complete. Click here to take the survey. If you can’t do it right now, please come back to it at your earliest convenience. The survey is only open through February 15, 2019.

We will be pleasantly persistent in the coming weeks as we hope to reach at least 20% (but always hoping for 100%) participation before the survey closes. Currently, our response rate for both schools is hovering at around 5%.

The information gathered will be used by our schools to help identify areas of strength and areas for improvement. The identity of respondents and their survey responses will be kept completely confidential. Our School Improvement Teams will use your feedback to plan for upcoming school years and work with the PTA to improve identified areas of growth.

For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, please visit the 5 Essentials Support Center online.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this important survey.

Sincerely,

Kevin Dorken & Erik Friedman

Illinois 5Essentials Survey

Sinceramente,

Kevin Dorken & Erik Friedman

Director de Lyon & Director de Pleasant Ridge Principals

Winter Weather

Please remember to dress your kids appropriately for the cold, snowy weather. Children will go out for recess as much as possible. Please send your children in snow pants, hat, gloves and boots if there is snow on the ground.

Erin's Law from Linda Brown, Lyon School Social Worker

The Glenview School District curriculum continues to include Erin’s Law, a state mandated, age-appropriate sexual abuse / assault awareness and prevention education program for students Pre-K through 12th grade. It mandates that all public schools educate children about sexual abuse prevention through age appropriate curriculum including role-plays, discussions, activities, and videos. The purpose of these activities is to give children the tools needed to speak up and tell an adult if anyone has ever touched them inappropriately.

Lyon School is partnering with Northwest Center against Sexual Assault for our sexual abuse prevention programming this year. On February 4th – 6th, the representative from NWCASA will be in your child's classroom to discuss a variety of the following concepts:

· Safety in the community [pk-1]

· Safe vs. Unsafe touches [all grades]

· Private Parts are covered by your bathing suit [all grades]

· Touching rule: no one should touch your body unless helping keep you clean/healthy [all grades]

· 3 Steps if a child has a body emergency: SAY NO, GET AWAY, TELL A TRUSTED ADULT [all grades]

· Identifying who safe, trusted adults are and why kids should tell them [all grades]

· When someone breaks the touching rule, it is not the child's fault [all grades]

Nationwide, 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be the victim of some type of sexual abuse by the time they reach age 18. Through this program aimed at educating and empowering students, we want to provide your child with the knowledge and skills to use if ever threatened by sexual violence.

Lyon believes that all our students will benefit from participating in this program. However, if you do not want your child to participate, please send a note to the school office (to the attention of our Social Worker) or email (LBrown@glenview34.org) prior to Friday, January 25th, and we will arrange for alternate activities during the presentation.

The website for more information on Erin’s Law is: http://erinslaw.org/. For more information about CASA, the website is: www.nwcasa.org, or call (847) 802 2195.

Thank you!

Linda Brown
