Principal's Corner
Dear Orca Families and Students,
The first week of autumn has arrived. I hope you had a great week and spent some time outside to enjoy the cooler evenings.
We are proud of our new #1 Public High School in the Orlando Area ranking by Niche. Our students and staff work hard each and every day to strive for excellence. This distinction is an acknowledgment of that hard work and I thank you all for making OSS Middle High #1!
The ASAP Walk and Roll for a Cure is tomorrow! We hope you can join us to help bring funding and awareness to Chiari Malformation Syndrome.
The Fall Festival will be here before you know it! This is OSS's biggest family fun events. It is also one of our biggest fundraisers and helps to fund equipment and special projects for our student clubs and academic teams. Please use the adult and student volunteer links in today's issue to sign up and help make the Fall Festival a huge success!
There are many wonderful things happening at OSS Middle High in the coming month, read all about them in today's issue.
Have a great weekend, we will see you Monday!
Respectfully,

ORLANDO SCIENCE Middle HIGH SCHOOL RECOGNIZED AMONG 2020 BEST SCHOOLS IN AMERICA
We are thrilled to announce that OSS Middle High has been recognized as a “2020 Best Public High School” by Niche! This year, we ranked 1st in the Orlando area!
We’ve earned this ranking by scoring highly in many different factors that aim to capture what it’s really like to attend OSS. While we’ve always known that OSS is a wonderful place to learn and grow, we’re so proud of our students and staff for earning this national distinction.
You can check out Orlando Science Middle High School’s profile and see the full list of 2020 rankings, methodologies, and data sources over at https://www.niche.com/. Thanks again to our Orca community for working hard every day to make OSS worthy of national attention.
OSS Celebrates Freedom Week
8th grade takes on Washington DC!
A group of 70 OSS 8th graders, along with Mrs. Frunker, Mr. Koebe and Mr. Bautista, are spending their weekend in Washington DC! This trip provides our students the opportunity to see their civics education come to life at the US Capital. It also allows them to pay their respects and reflect at some of our US memorials: the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Vietnam Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial and many others. A visit to Mt. Vernon where students sit on the same back porch where George Washington used to sit and watch the Potomac River is sure to leave an impression. We wish you all a weekend of hands-on learning and wonderful memories!

ASAP WALK AND ROLL FOR A CURE
One of OSS's long term families, and our Lynx campus Math Teacher Mr. Adair and his family, are planning a benefit walk to show support and bring awareness to a little known illness that affects their family called “Chiari Malformation Syndrome” or just “Chiari” for short.
Mrs. Adair has recently become the Central Florida Spokesperson for Chiari Awareness, and through her efforts has made the month of September “Chiari Awareness Month” for the state of Florida, thanks to the recent declaration that Ron DeSantis, our Governor has just signed. Jeni is also in the process of having the Mayor of our home town of Apopka sign a similar proclamation as we are concerting our efforts in sponsoring the Fundraiser in Apopka.
There are many ways to participate and/or show support:
- Attend the walk on Saturday, September 28th at 10am. (Registration and review of the silent auction items and raffle items will begin at that time, and introductions start at 11, with the walk at 11:15am)
- Sponsor a walker and donate in their name on the website
- Donate independently to cause on the website
- Read about how Chiari has affected our family on the website

Fall Fetival Volunteers 2019
Adult Volunteers Needed!
- We need YOUR help! The OSS PVO is asking the OSS parents to sign up to volunteer and help at the Fall Festival on Friday, November 1st and Saturday AND/OR November 2nd. On Friday we need help during the day with receiving bake sale items at morning drop off, festival prep and starting at 6:00 pm with building one set up. On Saturday there will be donuts and coffee at 7am and you will receive a volunteer lunch voucher when you check in for your shift. Saturday has two shifts available plus early morning set up. If you are working the 2nd shift, come early to eat before your shift starts, the volunteer lunch room will close at 2:00pm. There is a ½- hour overlap to make sure that the post is not left vacant if the second shift is running late. We would appreciate any additional help for early set up at 7:00 am.
- Elementary OSS Parents, we also need coverage for the inflatables and have 4 (1.5 hour) shifts for each grade level. Please consider helping supervising one of those shifts so we can keep the inflatables open all day. These shifts have been added to the Elementary School Adult Volunteer sign up page.
- Also please consider donating to our Bake Sale. We are accepting home baked or store bought desserts to compliment our lunch menu. OCPS rules are listed on the sign up page and non perishable donations can be dropped off the Friday morning before.
All the three sign ups can be found on the same Sign Up page. Click on the tab at the top of the page that corresponds with your campus and please sign up for multiple times. The PVO appreciates your support.
Science Fair 2019-2020 Week 3
Science Fair Week 3
During the past week, you have been working on designing a fair experiment to test your hypothesis. While doing so, you have considered the time it takes for you to complete all your trials, the location where you will be conducting your experiment and the cost of the materials and the tools.
Now as apart of approval process, all students need to submit a Research Plan to their Science teachers (Adult Sponsor). Just like anything else, if you have a good plan you increase the success level of your project. Your research plan will inform your teacher about the steps of your project that you plan to perform so that they can oversee the potential pitfalls or shortcomings and give you timely feedback to optimize your project. Your research plan will also include details of your procedures. In addition to performing the experiments, an important part of scientific investigation is to know what data to collect and how to collect it properly. You will also need to explain how to analyze your data in your research plan.
The Research Plan template has been uploaded on OSS Connect under your science course as a word document. You can also find it in the link below. As always, communicate with your teacher if you need more guidance on this week’s goals or if you need clarifications on the Research Plan. We are very excited to see the details of your projects and how they will turn out!
Best of luck Orcas!

The Month of September 2019 will mark the second annual observance of "American Founders". American Founders' month offers the opportunity for students to participate in activities related to the nation's founding fathers, who were instrumental in crafting historical documents that provide for individual liberty and representative government.
In each of our September Newsletters, we will feature one or two of our seven founding fathers, be sure to check back each week to learn more information.
alexander hamilton
Alexander Hamilton was born in the British West Indies in 1755. "A member of the Continental Congress, an author of the Federalist Papers, a champion of the Constitution and the first secretary of the Treasury, where he helped found the first national bank, the U.S. Mint and a tax collection bureau that would later become the U.S. Coast Guard. Troubled by personal and political scandals in his later years, Hamilton was shot and killed in one of history’s most infamous duels by one of his fiercest rivals, the then Vice President Aaron Burr, in July 1804"

CELEBRATE FREEDOM WEEK AND CONSTITUTION DAY
On September 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document they had created, the US Constitution. OSSS students will observe this important day in our nation's history in their social studies classes.
In addition to Constitution Day, Celebrate Freedom Week is an official holiday in Florida schools from September 23-27th. It is designed to emphasize the teaching of our country's origins with an emphasis on the founding documents.

What is a Multi-Tiered System of Supports?
MTSS is a term used to describe an evidence-based model of schooling that uses data-based problem-solving to integrate academic and behavioral instruction and intervention. The integrated instruction and intervention is provided to students at varying levels of intensity based on student need. The goal is to prevent problems and intervene early so that students can be successful. Please reach out school staffing specialists if you have any questions.
30/30 DISMISSAL RULE
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that is nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.

OSS Middle High Parents: Welcome back to school! We have some wonderful events planned to make this year a memorable one for our Orcas. Join us in helping to make these events a huge success and register below. We look forward to working with you!
New Orange County Text 911 Service
Citizens and visitors in Orange County can now send a text message to 911 during an emergency or life-threatening situation. When seconds matter, a voice call to 911 is still the best and fastest way for a 911 call taker to retrieve and deliver life-saving information in the event of an emergency. However, there are certain circumstances where a text to 911 may be a better option. These include:
- You are hearing impaired
- You are speech impaired
- Making a voice call places you in a dangerous situation
- You have tried to call 911 but cannot get phone reception
If you choose to send a text message to 911, please remember the following:
- Always provide your exact location and the nature of your emergency
- Remember to silence your phone if you are in a dangerous situation
- Avoid using slang, social media jargon, and abbreviations
- Do not send photos, emojis, or videos
- Do not send a group text
