Winter Recess

Students go outside twice a day for recess. They go out for approximately 20 minutes after lunch and take another 15 minute recess either in the morning or afternoon. All students will go out for recess if it is (real feel) 15 degrees or higher. Please make sure they bring a winter jacket, gloves, hat, snowpants, and boots. Students will only be allowed to play in the snow if they have all of the necessary items. If students do not have snowpants or boots, they will have to stay on the blacktop area.

If you do not have the above items and can't afford to purchase them, contact your child's teacher to see if there are donations available.

This month we are talking about Responsibility!

The dictionary talks about Responsibility in a few ways: fulfilling your duties, being accountable and having consequences, and the independence you can earn to make decisions on your own. We are using this definition at school: Responsibility: to take action and understand how our choices affect others, ourselves, and the world. All the choices we make impact the world around us in big and small ways. The responsible person works to be aware of this impact and makes decisions based on what is good for as many people as possible. This requires reflection, self-control, and a willingness to take ownership. We will spend time talking about how to build and use these skills so we can earn more Responsibility in our life. We will make sure everyone knows what role they play in creating a successful classroom and school community. We will think about people with a lot of Responsibility like Helen Keller and the Dalai Lama. When we work together, when we share the Responsibility of a better world, we can accomplish great things!

The percentage of students meeting state standards on the STAR assessment has increased at every grade level in literacy and all but one in math. We will be setting goals for the second half of the year to continue this growth.

Meet Mr. Farquer, one of our interventionists at Mable Woolsey

Hi! I’m Ben Farquer. I’m the K-4 Reading Interventionist here at Mable. I just wanted to take a second to provide you with some suggestions for reinforcing the phonics/reading skills your child is learning. There are a wide range of activities, both big and small, that will have a profound impact on your child’s ability to decode words and increase their fluency. Everyday tasks can be turned into some sort of phonics/reading activity. Something as simple as asking your child to tell you the sounds in a word on items you find at the grocery store helps tremendously. You could have them try and read the items to you on your grocery list. You could have them read words on items you may have at home. Even taking just ten minutes to read can greatly help. I would suggest using some of the methods listed previously or even coming up with your own! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much little activities like the ones above can help your child learn to read. Thanks so much for all the hard work you do and for giving us the opportunity to work with you and your child!

Update Regarding Quarantining and Isolation for Schools

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced that schools should continue to follow the current IDPH COVID-19 School Guidance, including for isolation and quarantine times. IDPH has adopted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendation to reduce the number of days for isolation and quarantine for the general public.

The CDC expects to issue updated guidance for isolation and quarantine in school settings shortly. We understand that you are eager for this guidance, and we share your sense of urgency. At this time, please continue to follow the guidance currently in place. ISBE is working with IDPH to update the School Guidance as soon as we know more.
