Talk: "A Jewish Odyssey on Three Continents: The Memoir of Menachem Mendel Frieden"

The remarkable memoir of Menachem Mendel Frieden (1878-1963) illuminates the Jewish experience in all three of the most significant centers of Jewish life during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: Eastern Europe, the United States, and Palestine, where Frieden settled in 1921.
Professor Lee Shai Weissbach, University of Louisville, will lead the talk.
Interfaith Amigos Open Forum

The open forum is open to Knox faculty, staff, and students.
With their willingness to openly address the usual taboos of interfaith dialogue—the “awkward parts of each tradition—the Interfaith Amigos create a more authentic conversation, between themselves and with their audiences, giving people an opportunity to step more fully into the rich promise of the interfaith experience.
Their work is dedicated to supporting more effective interfaith dialogue that can bring greater collaboration on the major social and economic issues of our time.
Pastor Don Mackenzie, Ph.D., now living in Minneapolis, is devoting himself to interfaith work after retiring as Minister and Head of Staff at Seattle’s University Congregational United Church of Christ. Rabbi Ted Falcon, PhD, spiritual guide, author, teacher and therapist, has taught Jewish traditions of Kabbalah, meditation and spirituality since the 1970s. Imam Jamal Rahman is co-founder and Muslim Sufi Minister at Interfaith Community Sanctuary in Seattle and adjunct faculty at Seattle University.

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad.

Safe Harbor will be hosting a Take Back the Night march at the Lake Storey Pavilion (1572 Machen Drive). Memory Formation: Talk by Dr. John Larson

Dr. Larson is a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms of memory formation. Some of his projects include: cortical synaptic function and memory in mouse models for autism, regulation of neuronal gene expression in learning, synaptic plasticity and neuronal function in mouse models for Alzheimer’s disease, and more.

The CIL and Lo Nuestro are hosting a fall day of fun! We will leave Knox for Country Corner in Alpha, IL, where you will have the opportunity to solve a corn maze and pick your own pumpkin. Then, we will head to Orion, IL for dinner at Pizza Hut before heading to one of the top 10 haunted houses in Illinois, Torment at Twelve Hundred.
