Expect Excellence In Everything
A Note from Mr. Bender
Dear Families,
Thank you for helping to make week two of digital learning such a success! I have enjoyed watching your children engage in digital lessons, participate in zoom sessions, and “show and tell” during morning meetings. While the classroom may look a bit different, our commitment to providing a high-quality education remains our priority.
Next week we look forward to welcoming back our kindergarten and first grade students that have opted for in-person learning on Wednesday, August 26. The district has established many safety protocols to help keep our students and staff safe. These protocols include wearing masks, practicing social distancing, frequent hand washing, and increased cleaning procedures for high-touch areas. You can read more about the district's plan for the return of in-person learning at the Return-To-Learning Hub.
I hope you have a restful and fun-filled weekend. We look forward to seeing you on Zoom on Monday!
Mike Bender
Principal
Transportation Updates
If your kindergarten or first grade child will be returning for in-person instruction beginning on Wednesday, August 26, you should have been contacted by a WMES staff member regarding afternoon transportation for your child. If you have not received a phone call asking if your child will be a bus rider, car rider, or day care rider in the afternoon, please reach out to the front office.
Kindergarten and first grade students that will be a car rider for the 2020-2021 school year, must stop by the school to pick up their car rider tag prior to Wednesday, August 26. If you do not have a car rider tag visible in your car when you come to pick up your child in the afternoon, you will be directed to the front office before your child will be released to you.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Character Trait and Mindfulness Activity of the Month
We hope everyone had a great first week of digital learning. As we visited Zoom classes, we saw so many of our students being respectful to their classmates and teachers. The character trait for the month of August is Respect. We define respect as treating others how we want to be treated. Another way that we can show respect to our classmates and teachers is by being kind and thinking about their feelings. As a reminder, teachers will be choosing one student this month who has exhibited respect the most to represent his/her class as the Cub of the Month.
Parents, as you are navigating digital learning, we know that this can be a challenging time for all. Please check out the Woodward Mill Counseling Department’s eCLASS page for resources and opportunities for you or your child to meet with us virtually. You can find us through your child’s eCLASS page under “My Courses.”
Each month, we will feature a mindfulness activity on the announcements, during class meetings, and on our eCLASS page. You can watch Mrs. Woodworth do a demonstration of each month’s activity on the counseling eCLASS page. This month is “Counting Breaths”!
Our summer reading celebration will be held in September! All students that logged 480 minutes of reading in the Gwinnett County Public Library Beanstack program will be recognized and rewarded! We are proud of your efforts to meet your summer reading goals! Keep reading!

Teacher Spotlight
This week's PTA Teacher Spotlights are...
Mrs. Loring
Mrs. Baynard
Mrs. Dominiecki
Testimonies from the parents:
“We’ve loved ALL of our teachers and staff members, but Mrs. Loring is above and beyond amazing! My now 4th grader said, “Mrs. Loring made 2nd grade magical!”
“Mrs. Baynard is my child’s cheerleader! I look forward to her morning meetings. She is so upbeat and positive!!!”
“Mrs. Dominiecki has taken the whole digital learning to another level. I know we have just started doing digital but starting with a kindergartener is not easy. She is keeping the kids engaged, and the one on one sessions my daughter loves. It is a joy to watch and hear them dancing and learning at the same time. I know this was hard for all teachers, but Mrs. Dominiecki, you are making it look soo easy!”

We are excited to announce that WMES has been designated as a “No Place for Hate School”! No Place for Hate helps schools foster a culture of respect and create a safe, bully-free learning environment for all students. During the 2019-20 school year, we completed activities as a school to work toward building a brave and equitable school. This year, all students and staff signed the No Place for Hate pledge on a banner outside of our cafeteria. We also completed three activities to encourage kindness, respect, and inclusion in our building: the addition of the Buddy Bench to our playground, Kindness Week in November, and “Mix it Up” day in February. Thank you to student council who served as our student group in planning activities for this initiative!
"The Promise of Gwinnett” campaign is a means of focusing attention on the importance of public education, the role it plays in our nation, and the outstanding schools found right here in Gwinnett County. In addition, the campaign focuses on the accomplishments of our students and the promise they hold for a bright future. Click here to visit the Promise of Gwinnett.
