SAFETY FIRST!
January 2, 2020
Dear Waukesha Families and Staff,
The School District of Waukesha is committed to providing a safe, supportive learning environment for all students. The safety of students, staff and our school community continues to be our top priority.
As a follow up to the November 27, 2019 district letter to all of our families and staff pertaining to safety, and in light of incidents at Waukesha South and North High Schools on December 2, 2019, we would like to again ask for your assistance in our efforts to make our school community as safe as possible.
We respectfully ask parents and staff to do the following:
Remind students that the items they bring to school must be appropriate for school. Wisconsin State Statute 948.61 (1) forbids students from bringing dangerous weapons (including but not limited to BB Guns and Pellet Guns) to school. We urge parents to routinely check their child’s backpack.
Remind students that threats, both direct and indirect, towards our students and schools will not be tolerated, even if intended as a “joke.” Any student found to be making a threat against the school or the district will be disciplined utilizing Board Policies 5600 and 5600.01. These steps may include the issuance of a 5-day out of school suspension and a pre-expulsion hearing, which further may result in a scheduled expulsion hearing with the Board of Education.
Remind students to use social media and the internet wisely. Students should not share anything on social media that they would not want their teachers, college admission officers, future bosses, and grandma to see.
Remind students to treat others with respect and kindness. Teach students that it is wrong to ridicule differences (e.g., race, religion, appearance, special needs, gender, economic status) and try to instill a sense of empathy for those who are different.
Remind students that “if you see something, say something.” Talk to kids and let them know that if they see suspicious activity, they should report it to a person of authority.
As always, the district will continue to drill, review, and refine our safety procedures. Thank you for your support in our efforts to maintain a safe and supportive environment for all of our students.
Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Joe Koch, PhD
Deputy Superintendent
School District of Waukesha

January iPad Clean-Up
As we begin the new year (decade) it’s time to check your student’s iPad to make sure only school related apps and pictures are on their device. If photos were made during the holidays please copy them to a personal device. Teachers will be checking more regularly during January to ensure proper use is being followed. Thank you for your help in this matter.
In December, Jenn Burns, Melissa Behm, and Pachion Carlson went to North HS to represent Rose Glen’s technology using WEF grant money. The student tech team presented Bee Bots and the Green Screen. Way to go!
We need donations!
Our Makerspace is starting to run low on some supplies. We are asking for donations of the following items so that students can continue to explore, collaborate, and invent in our space:
9 volt batteries (they help our tech items run!)
Toilet paper and paper towel tubes
Masking tape
Duct tape
In our front office, there will be a box labeled “Makerspace Donations” as an area that will collect these items. Students can bring them into their homeroom teacher or items can be dropped off in the office. Thank you for your support!
Coding Friday
Every other Friday, our Rose Glen Eagles take place in 15 minutes of coding. They use sites such as code.org to navigate their way through the world of coding! Kids are enjoying this time and are using their creativity in a new way.

Safe Arrival Attendance System
Pre-Excused Absences: If you know your child is going to be absent and you want to report that before the student is marked absent in school, Safe Arrival provides three convenient methods:
1. Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com). The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
2. Use the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.com. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
3. Call the toll-free number 1-866-490-7371 to report an absence using the automated phone system. These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week.
Future absences can be reported at any time.
Post-Excused Absences: If you were not able to report your child’s absence in advance you will be notified by the SchoolMessenger system if your child is marked absent.
You are notified of a reported absence within minutes of the reported absence.
The School Messenger app or the website will allow families to customize where they want to receive their notifications and allow them to excuse the absence right from the notification.
If you report your child’s absence in advance using the SafeArrival toll-free number, website or mobile app, you will NOT receive these notifications.
