Today the department works with programs helping children with limited ability of skilled English, as well as programs with physically challenged students.

History
Congress created the Department of Education in 1979, to coordinate federal assistance programs for public and private schools.
Head of Department
Arne Duncan has been the Secretary of Education since January 20, 2009. He was nominated by Barack Obama. He helped to keep and raise the congressional support for President Obama's investments in education, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's $100 billion to fund teaching jobs.

Budget
The Department of Education currently has a budget of $67.3 billion. The money goes to pell grant funding and programs touching on every area of education.
Current Issues
The Department of Education spends to much of the tax payers money, with little results.
They issued guidance on obligations of Charter Schools to comply with Federal Civil Rights Law.
