Message from the Principal
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We all know that spring is right around the corner. We "spring ahead" with our clocks in just a few days. Indian Grove students know spring is coming because we have had some sunny days outside during lunch recess! We are all glad that the days of cold winds and indoor recesses are hopefully behind us.
While the hard, cold winter weather may be a thing of the past, there is much to look forward to other than warmer temperatures. March is a shortened school month due to the Spring Break beginning at the conclusion of the school day on Friday, March 20. Some of the events prior to our break include the 2nd-grade musical, the annual PTC Fun Fair, a visit from Officer Friendly and ongoing clubs and groups meeting before and after school. The second trimester ended on February 28 and report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, March 13. March is also the time when our staff and administration start planning for the 2020-21 school year.
The third trimester of school tends to be the most challenging, academically, for students. There is a great deal of new material being investigated in the classroom. Students are engaging in lessons that they have never imagined. As an educator, I am always so proud of how well your sons and daughters take on new assignments and activities with their teachers.
Please take the time to read through this newsletter. It contains important information and is one way of finding out what is happening at school as we bid farewell to winter!
Respectfully,
Mrs. L. Fisher
Principal

STAYING HEALTHY!
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) always recommends the following preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses: ● Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. ● If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. ● Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. ● Avoid close contact with people who are sick. ● Stay home when you are sick. ● Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. ● Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. Please review these important things with your child while the cold and flu season is still with us.
The Census is Coming, The Census is Coming!
On April 1, 2020 the Census will officially open. This is an important time to make sure you and your family are counted. Your data is confidential and protected by federal law.
• A census is an official count or survey of a population.
• The decennial census—the U.S. Census Bureau’s most far-reaching questionnaire—is a count of every person living in the United States.
• The census occurs every 10 years, and the next one begins on April 1.
• Data from the decennial census is used to allocate $675 billion in federal funding among states and communities.
• Population data is also used to determine how seats in the House of Representatives are reapportioned among the states
Please make sure you are counted! Watch your mail for information
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE
March is national nutrition month. Let's get into March “Madness” about nutrition by eating healthy snacks, fruits and vegetables.
HYDRATION is so important. Please make sure your child has a water bottle. There are so many complaints about headaches which could be a sign of dehydration. Did you know the “rule of thumb” is to drink ½ of your body weight in ounces? An example is if your child weighs 90 pounds, they should be drinking 45 ounces of water every day!
Good nutrition, proper rest and lots of fluids are important to stay healthy. Just a reminder that I can not dispense something as simple as a cough drop without all proper forms completed, signed and dated by your healthcare provider and parent/guardian.
5th graders it's time to think about what’s needed for 6th grade. All of the information is found on our website under health services.
Dental exams as required by the State of illinois for Kdg and 2nd graders are due by May 15.

Preschool Screenings Information
RTSD26 will offer preschool screenings to all District 3 and 4 year olds suspected of having a developmental delay. In addition, we will also be screening students to see if they are eligible for the ECDEC preschool program and our Bilingual Spanish Preschool program. To be eligible for these programs, families must meet specific criteria, such as speaking a second language in the home, income level, or other criteria that can be explained to you at the screening.
If you are concerned that your child has a delay in vision, hearing, motor, speech, language, cognition and/or social functioning, call 224- 612-7308 to set up a screening time. All screenings are done by appointment only and take place at Parkview. Screenings are held on Thursdays and are once a month through April.
If you are unsure if your child is developing appropriately, please consult with your child's preschool teacher or pediatrician for advice. The Center for Disease Control offers the following information: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones/index.html
Your child must be at least 3 years old at the time of screening. Screenings are staffed by educational professionals and therapists who will make recommendations for further action to parents. All screenings are at Indian Grove and by appointment only. Translation services are available. To make an appointment in Spanish, please call Mrs. Perez or Mrs. Santiago at 224-612-7402
SCREENINGS DATES: (2019/2020): 3/12, 4/19 & 5/14
Board of Education
Your district’s Board of Education meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month at 7:00 PM. Meetings are held at one of the schools, mostly River Trails Middle School. At one of the semi-monthly meetings, an education report is presented. These reports highlight something special happening in the district.
You are cordially invited to attend, ask questions, and learn about the district. Copies of the Board’s agendas and minutes are posted on the district’s web site at http://www.rtsd26.org. Please contact the Superintendent’s office (847) 297-4120 x 7301 for information concerning Board meetings.
If you want a Board member to contact you, please call the Superintendent’s office and leave your name and telephone number. A Board member will return your call.
