Technology That Helps.

Tech for Deaf or Hard of Hearing Individuals.

Movie Captioning

Some theaters have been including captioning in their theaters since 1996 since they realized that the deaf and hard of hearing were being left out. The NAD invented Movie Access Coalition or movie captioning. This allows people to see words on a device or on a screen as the movie is played. This could help a deaf or hard of hearing individual because there would be a way to understand the movie. Over time more and more captioning devices have been added to theaters but still are limited in certain areas. You could find this device in specific theaters that carry captioned devices.

Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are a devices that amplify sound. This could help someone because if their hearing is damaged they can hear things louder. The common hearing aid has progressed many times like from the ear trumpet, to the first electric hearing aid in the 20th century.

FM Sound System

The FM sound system is a device that transmits radio waves straight through a device into a persons ear. This could help a deaf or hard of hearing individual because it can keep them up to date with things just like a regular radio. This was modified from the common FM radio progressed to this device

TTY

A TTY is a device that uses text to communicate. One person could speak while the other one could type with a keyboard. This can help a deaf or hard of hearing individual because they would not be able to hear the person speaking into the hone but they can read it. From the early 1960's the TTY has gone through a lot of technical changes in shape and in final outcome.

Cochlear Implants

A cochlear implant is a piece of technology that replaces the damaged part of the inner ear the cochlea. This is helpful to a deaf or hard of hearing individual because it can provide the brain with sound signals. At first many people had thought the cochlear implant would be a failure but it proved its worth over time. You could find this in a specialized clinic.
