Excellence in a Creative Environment for Learning
Student Spotlight: Meet Malise Ford
"What I love about D-B EXCEL is the faculty and staff. They are so supportive in any decisions we have to make. They go to any length to help the students. They care about the students so much and have done so much for us and to make the new kids feel welcome. They are the ones that should get more recognition than they do."
Malise chose to come to D-B EXCEL in order to have more flexibility in her schedule; Malise has a Von Willebrands disease, a bleeding disorder, which means she has to spend a lot of time at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital; because of this, she has to miss several days of school at a time. At one point, Malise missed thirty-six days just in one class, so her doctors recommended she find an alternative education solution. D-B EXCEL is very flexible with her schedule, which helps with her many doctor's appointments. When Malise misses school for being ill or for a doctors appointment, she is able to keep up with her coursework online. She says she never knew how much she would love DBE. Malise likes D-B EXCEL because she's a fast-paced learner, and it allows her to work at her own pace. She also likes being able to earn a virtual day every Friday. Malise says she stays ahead in her classes and exceeds expectations to earn her virtual day, so she can attend doctor's appointments on Fridays and not miss school during the week.
May 8th - May 12th is Teacher Appreciation Week! Thank you to all the teachers who do a great job in providing a world class education to KCS students!

Planning for Next School Year
In preparation for next school year, D-B EXCEL students will be required to attend every Friday regardless of progress, grades or attendance. Fridays will no longer be for extra support but instead a regular school day.
Another change for the 2017-18 school year will be that all D-B EXCEL courses that have an EOC (End of Course Exam) will be taught in Canvas, not Edgenuity. Because of this, all parents will need to set up the Canvas Parent Application to view grades and progress. For specific instructions on how to set up the Canvas Parent App, please see the article at the bottom.
Clubs & Extra Curricular Activities
Next school year, DBE will be offering more clubs and extra curricular activities for its students. Please fill out this form so we can have a better understanding of things you would be interested in doing next year.

Canvas Parent App
Canvas Parent enhances the potential for parents to engage in their children's education. Parents can review upcoming or past assignments, check on grades, and receive course announcements.
Canvas Parent can be used by anyone who creates an account, has been added to Canvas with an observer role, or has signed up as a parent using the web browser.
Access to Canvas Parent is managed by the student's institution.
Parents can use the Canvas Parent app on all iOS and Android devices. View the Canvas Parent Android Guide and the Canvas Parent iOS Guide.
View Student Courses and Grades
The Courses tab displays the list of courses where their students are enrolled. For each course, parents can see course grades, the syllabus, and assignments and events. Grades display according to the course grading scheme.
View Student Assignments and Events
Assignments and events can be viewed by course or week. Parents can set reminders for a specific assignment or event, which are sent to mobile devices as push notifications.
Set Alerts for Student Activity
The app settings allow parents to set alerts for specific assignment and grade activity. Alerts are displayed in the Alerts page in the app.
