Region Band News

Jacob R made the Region Band! This is an honors band that is recruited through the SC Band Director's Association. Jacob was selected from students in eight surrounding counties in our area. This is in addition to All County Band that he attended a few weeks ago. Way to go, Jacob! Jacob is pictured above with Southwood's Band Director, Alan Nowell.

Dr. Roehrs Talks About Brain Science

Miss Mahoney's 1st period class had a special visitor Monday! Because they are reading Phineas Gage: a Gruesome but True Story about Brain Science, Dr. Roehr volunteered to talk to the students about the amazing capabilities of the brain. He also helped them understand brain injuries and conditions such as Epilepsy, head trauma, and concussions.

Author Skype & Book Club News

The 7th grade book club will get the opportunity to talk to Deborah Hopkinson Wednesday, February 10th during 7th grade lunch! The 7th grade book club has been reading her book The Great Trouble which blends history and science into an exciting novel.


Because of the author skype on Wednesday, the 6th and 8th grade book clubs will meet Thursday, February 11th this week.

School Spelling Bee

The school spelling bee will be Wednesday, February 10th at 8:15 in the cafeteria. Parents are invited to attend our school-wide spelling bee. Aden S, Conor D, Michael G, Yancy M, Chandler V, Max B, Morgan T, Skylar G, Ambria W, Duncan H, Jackson C, Madeline H, Nia R, Molly M, Ayden H are the classroom winners who will compete. 2nd and 3rd place classroom winners are back-up participants in case of student illness. Good luck to all of the participants!


Spelling bee participants, don't forget that the final spelling bee practice is Tuesday, February 9th during lunch in the media center.

Yearbook News from Mr. Powell

It is not too late! If you have not ordered a yearbook and you would like to get one, use this link to order online. Personalized yearbooks may still purchased until February 17th. Parents may also purchase recognition ads for 8th graders, and they are due February 12th. Design and submit an 8th grade recognition ad using this link.

Monday, February 15th is a PD Day - No School for Students

T-Dap Immunization Required for all 7th Grade Students

It is a state requirement that all students must have received the T-Dap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis) immunization BEFORE the start of 7th grade. In-coming 7th grade students will NOT receive a schedule or be able to go to class without an updated immunization record. When your child's shots are up to date, please send in a copy of his or her immunization record as soon as possible. For more information, please email our school nurse, Robin Rosa.


Parents, Southwood Academy will have a 1 day T-DAP clinic! This means your 6th grade student will be able to get the immunization and have all of the necessary paperwork at school. Watch for the permission form in the next few days!

IGP's for 8th Grade Students & Parents

Individualized Graduation Plan meetings are very important for 8th grade students and their parents because this is when 9th grade course requests and forms are filled out. IGPs are going on now. If you have not set up an IGP meeting for your 8th grade student, please contact Paula Doolittle to schedule your appointment.

Student Government News

Southwod Academy's student government is conducting a Valentine fundraiser. Students, parents, and faculty members may purchase a Valentine carnation or candy gram for someone special. Carnation grams are $2, and candy grams are $1. Valentines will be delivered during morning meeting Friday, February 12th. If you would like to order one, use the form below and send it in with a payment. Orders will be taken until Tuesday, February 9th.


The student government is sponsoring a Valentine's Dance Friday, February 12th after school until 4:30 pm. The cost for the dance is $3 at the door.


Student government students need to stay after Thursday, February 11th until 4:30 to help with Valentine sorting and dance preparations.

2016 ELA & Math After-School Tutoring

Students will be invited to join ELA or math tutoring if they are in need of extra practice or assistance. If you would like your student to be part of after-school tutoring, please contact your student's teacher.

ELA tutoring will be on the following Mondays: February 8th, February 22nd, February 29th, March 7th, March 14th, March 21st, April 4th, April 11th, April 18th, and April 25th.

Math tutoring will be on the following Thursdays: February 11th, February 18th, February 25th, March 3rd, March 10th, March 17th, April 7th, and April 14th.

ELA and Math tutoring is 3:15-4:15 pm; prompt pick up is greatly appreciated!

Southwood Academy's Parent Cafe

Enjoy lemonade, cookies, and conversation! Parents, grandparents, and guardians are welcome to join a conversation about the joys and challenges associated with parenting middle school students. The Parent Cafe will be hosted by guidance counselor Paula Doolittle and will be held Thursday afternoons 2-3 pm in the cafeteria February 4th, February 11th, February 18th, and February 25th. Space will be limited, so please contact Paula Doolittle to register. You may also download and fill in the registration form below.

Magnet School Application & Information

The Magnet Application window is January 4th - February 29th. During this time, you may apply to any elementary or middle school in the district using this link. You may also fill in a form in person at the District Office located at 400 Pearman Dairy Road. Please fill in the Magnet Application form even if your rising 6th grade student plans to audition this spring.

Inclement Weather Make-up Day

It was so nice to sleep in Friday, January 22nd! Since we took an inclement weather day, we will need to make up that school day. Anderson 5 has declared that we will make up the day on Friday, March 25th.

Poetry Slam

Southwood Academy's third annual Poetry Slam will be Friday, February 26th at 8:30 am in the cafeteria. The 7th grade ELA classes have been studying poetry and finding their voices in preparation for the big event.

Celtic Fest Has Been Rescheduled

Celtic Fest has been rescheduled for February 19th-20th at Calhoun Academy of the Arts Auditorium. Orchestra students from Anderson Districts 1 and 5 will be participating in the annual Celtic Fest. This is an event during which elementary, middle, and high school orchestra students learn the art of fiddlin'. Emerald Road will be in attendance at this concert, playing along with the students, as well as performing some of their songs.


Celtic Fest is a free event! Hope to see you there!

Westside Relay for Life

The Westside Relay for Life 5K will be February 13 at 8:30 am. The event will take place at Westside's practice field on Pearman Dairy Rd. and Jackson St. To register for this event, use this link. Early registration is $25 until Jan. 29th, and late registration is $30. Packet pickup and race registration will take place Friday, February 12th 4:30-6:30 in the Westside commons area.
