JBD FRIDAY FOCUS
Weekly Family Newsletter June 1, 2018
Is it June already???
This year has flown by! Truly hard to believe that we are winding down to the end of the 2017-2018 school year. Congratulations to all of our third and fourth graders, as they rocked the SOL tests!! We are incredibly proud of their efforts and their hard work. Fifth grade still has two more SOLs- Science and Virginia History. Please encourage your students to review their Jefferson Labs and any review activities assigned by their teachers. Tuesday, June 5 and Wednesday, June 6 are their days to bring it home next week. They got it!
A couple of things you all may be wondering about: Safety Patrol applications will be available for fourth graders next week. Students need to be positive role models and in good academic standing to be considered for the Safety Patrol.
SCA Elections will be held in the FALL next year. Stay tuned for more info when you return in September about SCA.
Usually, at this time of year we distribute applications for our News Crew. However, our newsroom will not be up and running until mid year of the next school year due to construction. These past few weeks, we have been doing our morning announcements and dismissal the old fashioned way- over the intercom. Guess what? It is working just fine!
Also, for end of the year parties, we must limit parent attendance. There is truly no extra parking and we absolutely cannot park at Great Neck Middle School. Thank you for understanding.
Finally, I need to remind everyone about our dress code. No flip flops, spaghetti straps, or super short skirts or shirts. This becomes very noticeable this time of year in our fourth and fifth grades. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Have a wonderful weekend and stay cool! Thank you for all of your support and sharing your awesome children with us. We look forward to finishing strong!!!

All 5th grade families, look for information to come to you soon about the details about the PTA sponsored celebration for the 5th grade students as they prepare to leave John B. Dey for Middle School.
2. 5th Grade Moving On Ceremony, Thursday, June 14th. 6:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the John B. Dey gymnasium followed by a reception in the cafeteria. This is the final good-bye to our rising 6th grade students.
**** If you have any interest in being a part of the planning committee for any events that the PTA hosts, please email JBDPTApresident@gmail.com to let us know!! We want everyone to be a part of this process to make John B. Dey a great school and we can't do it with just a few. There are all kinds of ways to be a part of the volunteer network that makes the events and programs happen. We are always looking for new people with new ideas to share with the PTA. The summer is the time of planning for the new school year, so don't delay!
Got ideas and want to share with the incoming Executive Board of the PTA? You can send your suggestions to JBDPTApresident@gmail.com.

GOOD LUCK ON SOL'S!
GIFTED CORNER
Gifted Corner
For those of you considering putting your child up for gifted identification in the fall, use your time until then to take a good look at your child. Record when your child surprises you and how he/she solves problems. Write down the clever things said and the rich vocabulary that they pick up. Expose your children to local attractions and keep anecdotes on their responses to novel things!
Here are some questions that might lead you in parenting and give you opportunities to record how your children respond:
Do you answer your child’s question with patience and good humor?
Do you take advantage of their question and expressions of interest to guide them into further learning and exploration?
Do you help them develop physical and social skills as carefully as you encourage mental growth?
Do you help them learn how to get along with children of all levels of intelligence?
Do you avoid comparing them with their brothers and sisters or companions?

Gifted Resource Teacher, John B. Dey Elementary School
CLINIC CORNER
If your child has medication in the clinic (Epi pen, Inhaler, Motrin) please pick it up before dismissal on June 15 - the last day of school. All medication not picked up will be discarded.
Parents of rising 6th graders- Tdap immunization is required to enter 6th grade. If you have given the clinic proof of your student having this required immunization then they are all set to start middle school. I have access to student’s record up until June 15. Proof of receiving the Tdap needs to be taken to the middle school over the summer. A letter from the Virginia Dept. of Health about the HPV vaccine was sent to you. Just to clarify the first paragraph stated “The 2007 Virginia General Assembly passed a law that requires rising 6th grade girls to receive the HPV vaccine series. The law also requires the Virginia Dept. of Health provide parents of rising 6th graders information about the vaccine.” In the third paragraph of that letter it states “after reading the information, a parent/guardian may choose their child not to receive the HPV vaccine for school entry.” I hope this helps to clarify the information that was sent to all of you. If you have any questions, please call me.
Have a safe and fun summer.

FIRE AND LIFE SAFTETY CAMP
Dear Parent and/or Guardian,
FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY CAMP is a ½ day local camp that runs Monday through Friday. The camp is dedicated to exposing school age kids to what it is like to be a firefighter with the Virginia Beach Fire Department. FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY CAMP is a great opportunity for firefighters to help kids build a sense of teamwork and responsibility. We accept applications from RISING 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders by the date of your selected camp (copy of report card must be presented).
Our FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY CAMP is designed to be fun, challenging, entertaining, and educational; all at the same time. We want the children to learn safety lessons about things around their homes and schools that they encounter every day. They will have short periods of lectures and lessons to endure each day followed by opportunities to actively participate in exercises designed to reinforce what they have been taught.
Their lessons and activities will center on the day and life of a firefighter and fire and life safety issues but will branch out to learn basic first aid, water safety, bike safety, search and rescue and many other interesting topics. They will be divided into teams of 5 kids, which will operate as a “fire company” for all of their activities. Each child will get the opportunity to be the “company officer” for the day. Leadership principles will be taught to each child directly and indirectly.
Your child may receive various school supplies to possibly include crayons, pencils, pencil bag, ruler and a back pack that may or may not be of suitable size for school. Lunch will also be provided by Firehouse Subs on Wednesday. ALL OTHER DAYS, THE STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING THEIR OWN LUNCH WITH THEM. NO LUNCH ON FRIDAY.
MEDICAL/MEDICATIONS: We will not be able to administer any medication to your child. If your child gets injured or becomes ill, their status would be changed from “camper” to “patient” and could result in a transport to a hospital emergency room. Every attempt will be made to reach parent/guardian prior to medical assistance being provided. Children will not be allowed to keep medication of any type in their possession.
DRESS CODE: You should dress your child according to the weather forecast for the day. Shorts are acceptable. Although we do our best to control the temperature in the training room where classes are held, the room at times can be cold. If your child is cold-natured, please send a lightweight jacket with them. A camp t-shirt is provided on the first day. Many children will wear the t-shirt on Monday for pictures then again at the closing ceremony on Friday. CLOSED TOE SHOES AND SOCKS WILL BE REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES.
FUN WORK: Tuesday is Fire Prevention Day. Your child will receive information on how to draw an escape plan for your home. Our campers have two days to do the assignment and practice it, returning the assignment on Thursday morning with a parent’s or guardian’s signature indicating that the drill was practiced.
DISCIPLINE: Your child’s safety is important to us and to do that, discipline MUST be maintained. In the event your child becomes disruptive and does not respond to directions from Camp staff, you will be contacted to have him/her removed from Camp and possibly for the rest of the week if behavior necessitates it.
In order for any child to attend camp, he or she will have to rely on you or another adult for daily transportation. Therefore, there is some time involved on your part. The hours for camp are as follows:
MONDAY – THURSDAY from 8:30am to 12:30pm.
FRIDAY from 8:30am to 12:00 noon
Camp Graduation will be held on Friday. Graduation is at 12:00 noon with a small reception to follow.
Doors open for graduation ceremony seating at 11:45am.
CAMP LOCATION: HARRY E. DIEZEL VIRGINIA BEACH FIRE TRAINING CENTER, 927 S. BIRDNECK ROAD, VB 23451
Campers may be dropped off AFTER 7:45am and MUST be picked up by 1:00pm.
On behalf of the Virginia Beach Fire Department, we thank you for your interest in the Fire & Life Safety Camp and hope that your child will have a fun and positive learning experience.
HAVE A FIRE SAFE DAY!
