Reading Celebrations
Crazy STEM Hat Challenge
In honor of Read Across America Day, the Wild Horse Library and librarian Vanessa Glenn sponsored a Crazy Hat STEM Challenge. Students had from Monday to Wednesday to create a hat using various materials of their own choosing. The hats could be a modified version of a hat they already had or a whole new creation, but it had to be wearable. All students who took the challenge were able to put their name in for a raffle of books and other small prizes. More than 150 students participated in the challenge!
The Wild Horse Library also sponsored a 236 Minute Reading Challenge in honor of The Cat in the Hat, the classic children's book that contains 236 words. The class with the most participants won a set of books for their class library.
Chill Out & Read
On Read Across America Day, WMS students were encouraged to wear PJs and bring in their favorite picture book from their childhood to re-read and share with others during Language Arts class. Each class celebrated Reading Day with a special treat. Those treats were:
Glazed Donut – “Donut” what we'd do without readers like you!
Popcorn & Bookmark – “Pop” Open a Good Book!
Smarties and Junior Mints - Reading Makes Us “Smarties” & You are "mint" to be reader!
Some students read aloud to their classmates while others simply swapped books to read. Sixth grader Lily said, “Oh, the popcorn was delicious, and the book Henry shared with us was a good educational book.”
WMS librarian Karen Brown collaborated with LA teachers to plan the event.
Truman Voting & March Madness
At RVMS, librarian Angie Kohout hosted a Truman Voting Party. Students who read at least four Truman nominees were able to visit the library to vote for their favorite title and to sign a Truman banner. Students who participated in the event had their names entered in a raffle for prizes.
Rockwood Valley students also enjoyed the March Madness Tournament of Books. Students filled out their brackets to indicate which title they think will be named "RVMS Book of the Year." The winning book will be announced during the first week of April. The four semi-finalists are:
What Waits in the Woods by Kieran Scott
Divergent by Veronica Roth
Code of Honor by Alan Gratz
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Magical World of Books
PAWS for Reading
At Ridge Meadows, the Reading Day theme was "PAWS FOR READING." During library time, librarian Lisa Molengraft worked with each grade level on a nonfiction book study focusing on an animal as the main character. Then students analyzed the events in the book as they relate to kindness in their own lives. Their projects were hung in the entry with a doghouse that invited students to join Clifford and the other stuffed animals for some reading time. Teachers dressed as the Paw Patrol!
