Message from the Principal
Dear Thalberg Families,
November is upon us and there are a few reminders as we are into the routines of the year.
DROP OFF AND PICK UP
No student should be dropped off at the school without supervision. Doors open at 8:20 for student entry. For any drop offs after 8:35, students need to be brought in the
front entrance by parent or adult. Parents dropping off or picking up should NOT pass vehicles unloading students. This creates safety issues in the parent drop off circle. When picking up at the end of the day, please do not park in the circle. You are welcome to chat with other parents or let your children play on the playground, however, please do not park in the circle if you plan to do this. Please park in the lot if you plan to stay for any amount of time.
WEATHER AND RECESS
We are getting into some colder weather patterns and we go outside for recess as much as possible. Please remember that temperatures can vary throughout the day. Students need to be dress appropriately for the weather conditions during the recess period. Parents are welcome to send in a letter to wave our discretion as a school regarding outdoor play clothing choice (i.e. a note saying a sweatshirt or fleece is acceptable in all weather conditions).
The temperature information below is the guideline we try to use for outdoor recess
participation.
Temperatures:
50-60 degrees: Long sleeves or a light jacket are acceptable.
40-50 degrees: Jacket and long pants are needed.
Below 40 degrees: Winter jacket and long pants are required.
BUS SAFETY
We had our bus safety lessons with New Britain Transportation this past week. Bus safety rules were reviewed with all students. Please continue to reinforce the importance of being safe on the bus. Sometimes students think it is ok to move seats, stand up or play loud music on the bus. It is important for students to remember that the rules that apply while riding in a car should also be followed while riding on the bus.
November is a time to reflect and remember all that we are grateful for. I would like to share with you how thankful I am to be part of this Thalberg family. As I am getting to know each of our students, I have had the privilege of watching them show compassion for one another and truly care about their school. The world can always use a little more kindness and compassion and our children do this every day because they know that kindness matters. Please continue to encourage your children to embrace these qualities and be kind to each other.
“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” ~Aesop
Sincerely,
Mrs. Katie Reeves

SKATE
CALLING ALL WRITERS!!: SKATE (Smart Kids At Thalberg Elementary) is a program where students have the opportunity to be recognized for their hard work at Pep Rallies. Leading up to each Pep Rally a math challenge will be put out by grade level and 1 winner will be selected for each grade. Students can also submit writing of any kind at any time. The writing winners will be for 2 grade levels (K/1, 2/3, and 4/5). All winners will be recognized at the Pep Rally and will receive a certificate and a special pencil. Good luck and keep up the hard work!

DIALED BMX STUNT SHOW
Vocal Music Happenings with Mrs. Ferrall
We have been having a lot of fun in music class! Check out our Thalberg Music website for more info: https://tesmusic.wixsite.com/thalbergmusic
Kindergarten: Students have been continuing to practice keeping a steady beat to many different songs and rhymes. We’ve also been practicing contrasts such as fast/slow and soft/loud. Ask your child to play the game “Let’s Hide the Pumpkin” at home.
First Grade: Students are continuing to practice steady beat as well as deciphering between high and low notes. We practiced our steady beat in a fun game called “Old Mrs. Witch.”
Second Grade: Students are working more on reading and reciting rhythms on the syllables ta, ti-ti, and rest. Two of our favorite songs this month are “Only In October,” where we got to learn how to play the xylophone and “Pass the Orange Pumpkin,” in which we practice passing to the steady beat. We’re also continuing to work on our singing voices and practice our solfege syllables (sol and mi).
Third Grade: Third graders are getting very good at decoding rhythm and solfege patterns in class. We read the rhythm and then the solfege for a new song, “Pumpkin, Pumpkin,” and then learned a dance for it. The students also learned what the term “ostinato” means (a short repeated pattern) and came up with one as a class to go along with our song, “Pass the Orange Pumpkin.”
Fourth Grade: Students in fourth grade have been continuing to practice our solfege syllables and working on our singing voices. Students have been practicing singing in a round (ask your fourth grader to sing our spooky song we learned this month, “Ghost of John”). Fourth graders also worked on composing their own “candy compositions” using rhythms that matched up with some of our favorite candies.
Fifth Grade: Fifth graders have been working very hard on the songs for our winter concert! Our performances will be held on Monday, December 3rd. Fifth graders will perform for the other students during the day and then have an evening performance at 7 pm for families. More information has come home and we will send out a reminder as the date gets closer. J

Miss Baer’s Music Corner
Kindergarten students are developing their head voice through various vocal exploration activities. These include echoing Mr. Whistle, an Owl poem, and several animal sounds. They are learning about the musical “Heart Beat” and performing steady beat motions. Parents, thank you for helping your children with their “Ask Me!” papers. They sound great singing these songs
First grade students are singing songs with the high and low notes Sol & Mi. They learned to write the heart beat, silent beat (rest) and divided beat. They used popsicle sticks to draw these music symbols.
Second graders are enjoying playing circle games and dances as they learn about “Miss La”; the new note that is very different from Mr. Sol and Mr. Mi! They have begun creating rhythms with a new longer sound called Ta-ah.
Third graders can’t wait to play recorders. Thank you for returning your order forms. Recorders will be orders soon. Students are eagerly learning new notes and rhythms so they will be ready to play the recorders after Winter Vacation.
Fourth graders are decoding pentatonic (5 tone) songs with La, Sol, Mi, Re & Do. They have made great progress in their ability to sing using solfege names.
Fifth graders are rehearsing every week for their Winter Concert to be performed on Monday, December 3, 2018. They are improving their vocal skills through proper diction, blend, and phrasing. They are learning unison songs, rounds, and two-part music.
