The Mustang Minute

November 30, 2018 - Issue 12

During the second term at CMS we have been focusing on kindness as part of our social emotional learning initiative. We started with our food drive before Thanksgiving and will continue with a variety of activities and lessons during December and January. In December, we will kick off our annual toy collection for the Franciscan Hospital. Tied to this annual event we will have Mustang Block lessons that focus on ways to imbue kindness into our daily lives.

We see students engage in many acts of kindness each day, but also recognize that middle school students also have a large capacity for hurtful behaviors towards themselves and others. Our goal for this term is to help students focus on several objectives. What is kindness? How do you see yourself being kind? And what impact can kindness have on our community. Over the next few weeks, ask your students about acts of kindness and help them look for opportunities to be kind towards others.

Two New Clubs at CMS

We have two new clubs starting at CMS this winter. What is exciting is that both of these clubs were started by students. The students involved did a great job getting permission, outlining a plan, and following through to add more opportunities for students at CMS!

The LGBTQ+ Club
: Thursdays 2:05-3:00pm. Here at the Coakley Middle School, our LGBTQ+ Club brings together LGBTQ+ youth and straight allies to fight homophobia at the school and in the community through the pursuit of knowledge. Through our activities, we aim to reduce any feelings of isolation and depression that students may experience, whatever their sexual or gender identity may be. We welcome all students to participate in our after-school events, and to come talk about any issues concerning bullying or harassment due to prejudice and discrimination.

CMS Dance Team: Mon and Wed 2:10-3:10 in the cafe. Students can get together and share there love of dance! We have a parent volunteer and a staff advisory helping with skills acquisition and choreography. All are welcome. You can sign up outside of the guidance office.

As a reminder Intermural winter sports are starting soon. See Mr. Crawford with any questions.
