Prairie Elementary Jan. News

from Principal Kristen Jones

Message from Principal, Kristen Jones

Prairie Panthers, staff and families continue to rise above any challenges with an amazing attitude! I look forward to being alongside you all as we support academic and social development in 2022!!

One of my favorite times of day is delivering the morning announcements at 8:10. I get to announce the date, weather, birthdays, special events, and growth mindset motivational messages. Sixth grade leadership students sometimes chime in with special events to remember.

The consistent ending to daily announcements is standing to say the Pledge of Allegiance and the Prairie Pledge. Please take a moment to read this daily pledge your student makes to begin every day as a fresh new start at school. I feel so fortunate to be a part of this very special learning community!!

The Prairie Pledge:

I am the only person who can decide what I can do and be.

I am in charge of my learning and behavior.

Today I pledge to do my best.

I will practice kindness and love in all I say and do.

Keeping Healthy & Safe

We will continue to follow the 3 Ws as we return to school. Please review the importance of following these measures with your child.

  1. Wear masks when indoors (Be sure your child has an extra.)
  2. Wash our hands regularly
  3. Watch our distance

We will continue to cohort as classrooms and notify families if there are any low or high risk exposures to positive COVID cases at school.

Click here to read the SMSD 2nd Semester COVID-19 Mitigating Measures document. We will follow the guidelines set in the document to keep our students and staff healthy at Prairie.

Cold Weather Guidelines for Recess

There will be no recess when:

  • the temperature is below 15
  • the wind chill index is 0 degrees or more
  • there is falling moisture (more than a sprinkle or mist)

This does not preclude the teacher taking the class out for a few minutes of fresh air. All students are expected to participate in recess unless they stay in because of teacher or parent request.

If a parent wish their child stay in from recess, a note should be sent to the teacher. If the child is to be kept inside for more than three consecutive days, a note from the child's doctor is requested.

The district health office feels, "If a child is too sick to go outside for recess, the child is too sick to be in school." There are and can be many exceptions to this, but it is a good guideline.
