Happy Long Weekend, Bears!
Dear Parents,
I hope you enjoy a lovely long weekend. Monday is a school holiday for students, please note. Enjoy the day and do something fun. Below are a few updates from me related to next week and the weeks beyond:
- SBISD Mask Policy: We recently completed a check-in on classrooms and hallways and our SBMS Bears are doing an awesome job wearing their masks and practicing appropriate respiratory hygiene. As a reminder, students must wear their masks and face coverings over their noses and mouths. If your child's preference is a gaitor, please take a moment to review how they are wearing it at school- these seem to be the hardest to stay in place, particularly if students are not pulling them up high enough in the back and the gaitor has to stretch at a strange angle. Please remind your students of the expectations for wearing masks and face coverings properly- it is how we are taking care of each other at SBMS!
- Missing Work: Please review Skyward and ItsLearning with your student and ensure he or she is submitting his or her assignments completely and in a timely manner.
- Bringing Items to SBMS: We still have quite a few parents dropping off items students have forgotten at home or in the car. Please help us reduce the number of visitors to campus by asking your child to do a final check before they leave home or exit your car. If the item they have forgotten is not absolutely necessary or will help remind them to take more responsibility for their items if they go without it for one day, you may wish to allow your child to be without it for that day. While uncomfortable for all, it is better to learn these lessons while a child is in middle school than as they progress to high school and beyond. Questions about the visitors policy at SBMS for the 2020-2021 school year, please visit the LearnSBISD Plan.
- Public SBMS Calendar and SBMS Athletics Calendars: SBMS posts tests and athletic games on two public google calendars: Public SBMS Calendar and SBMS Athletics. While not all of the events for the fall are quite up yet, these are helpful calendars to use in planning logistics and personal calendars.
Finally, on October 19th we will be welcoming more SBMS Bears back to campus. On Wednesday, October 14th, I will be sending updates to those families making the switch from virtual to in-person so those families have the information they need for their student to return to school. More to come, but we are excited to greet more students back to campus very soon.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
Many thanks,
Stefanie Spencer
October 12th: Student Holiday/Staff Development Day
November 3rd: Election Day and At Home Synchronous Learning Day for SBISD
November 3rd is a scheduled remote learning day in observance of election day. The day will be considered a “synchronous” day.
- All students will learn from home on Nov. 3.
- All school personnel will report to school or work location at their normal times.
- November 3 is a regular school day and class periods/learning blocks begin live at their regularly scheduled time. Attendance is taken. Teachers will present mini-lessons or information so students may then transition to independent work thereby reducing time spent on zoom for students and allowing them to complete their work.
Student Health Screenings (Hearing, Vision & Scoliosis) for 7th Graders & New Students
Every school year our school nurse completes state-mandated Hearing, Vision and Scoliosis screenings for all 7th graders and new students. The guidelines provided to school nurses for these screenings are noted below. If you would like to decline the screenings, please send a letter to Ms. Mulvey at Mercedes.mulvey@springbranchisd.com before screening begins on October 16, 2020.
Parents may also share proof or a letter from the doctor showing results of these screenings from your child’s last physical to replace school screening.
Compliance with Texas Health and Safety Code requirements for vision, hearing, and spinal screenings is required for the 2020-2021 school year.
Schools should follow these guidelines for students to obtain vision, hearing and spinal screenings that are receiving in person or online instructions.
- Request parent to please bring student receiving online instructions to the school so screenings may be performed in accordance with the statutes
- In lieu of the screening(s) provided by the school:
1. parents or guardians may provide screening record signed by a licensed professional
2. parents or guardians may provide signed statement that the vision, hearing or spinal screening conflicts with the tenets and practices of a church or religious denomination of which the affiant is an adherent or member
Please contact our Nurse with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mercedes Mulvey,BSN,RN

SBMS Yearbook: Send Us Your Unusual Pet Pics!
Do you have an unusual pet? Whether it hisses, scratches, or breathes underwater, we want to see them in the yearbook! Upload your photos to the Balfour ImageShare app on your phone (create an account and the project number is 109143) or send it to sara.boyle@springbranchisd.com. Thank you!
A Word from our SBMS Librarian
Library book clubs are starting up this week! We will hold meetings for both in-person and virtual students before school. The in-person book club will meet at 8:10am on Wednesday, October 14; virtual students will meet on Thursday, October 15 at 8:10 (via Zoom, link to be shared later). To sign up, students should fill out this form or contact Mrs. Silva. Our first meeting will focus on books we’ve read lately.
If your student is interested in joining the book club but can’t attend before school, please contact Mrs. Silva at aaryn.silva@springbranchisd.com.
Tweens Read
Tweens Read is a local literary festival especially for tweens! This year, Tweens Read is a virtual event taking place from October 19-24. Most of the sessions are during the school day, but the recorded sessions will be available for two weeks after the event on the Tweens Read YouTube page. Tweens Read is a really fun opportunity for students to hear from authors and get excited about reading. More information, including registration information, can be found here.
SBISD Health Screener for In-Person Learners
Prior to the start of the school year, all families completed the SBISD Health & Safety Protocol Parent Acknowledgement Form. Included in these protocols is ensuring that every child coming to campus has a completed SBISD Health Screener every morning.
As a reminder, the health screener can be accessed via the district website (there is a blue box on the homepage titled ‘HEALTH SCREENER’ or by clicking here.) High school students may complete their own screener, but not those of their siblings.
Parents, it is critical that you report to your child's school if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, has had prolonged (15 or more minutes) direct exposure to someone who is COVID-19 positive, or is displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Please do not send your child to school. Please do complete the health screener and report to your school attendance office or nurse immediately. Please be sure to provide your contact information including a daytime telephone number where you can be reached.
View this video to see how to turn the screener into an icon (like an app) on your phone or tablet home screen for easier access:
See you soon! Stay tuned for messaging every Friday from SBISD!
