News to Know!

May 15, 2016

As we get into the middle of May, things are really starting to get crazy schedule-wise. As you can see by this newsletter, not only are there many academic activities, there are fun, community building activities as well. Hope you can join us for some of them!

Scholastic book orders due Monday

The last Scholastic book order deadline is Monday, May 16. You may send an order form and money in to school with your child or order online at Our online code is PC4J3.

Viking 5K- Run for the Playground

Parents- Do you want to join us as we celebrate our school community and work together towards a common goal? Consider joining us for the Viking 5K on June 7. It will be fun!

Keep rounding up pledges for the Viking 5K. Pledges received for the Viking 5K will help defray the delivery cost of Gibraltar Elementary's new playground. Giving the kids the chance to raise funds for the playground allows them the opportunity to take ownership in the project. It gives them a chance to say, "I was part of the community effort that enabled us to have this new playground." All students will be able to participate no matter how much or how little they were able to fundraise.

Yearbook orders-Last week for these as well!

Yearbook orders are currently being taken. Yearbooks this year are $20 apiece. Pink order forms and money can be returned to your child's teacher. Orders are due May 20.

the end is near for library book check-outs

The last day to check out library books will be May 27. Please remind your child to return any books they are not currently reading to help our librarians get a jump-start on reshelving the mass of books they are expecting to have turned in at the end of the year.

What We are Learning this Week

After our Unit 11 test on Monday, the students will be taking some time to review the many, many concepts we covered in Math this year.

In Writing class, we are still learning and applying new information into our "Chocolate Milk" argument letters. We will be working on writing strong introductions and endings in addition to adding rebuttals to our work. On Thursday, the students will be presenting their argument letters to their classmates. Who will have the most persuasive argument-the pro chocolate milk or anti chocolate milk camp?

The students will begin reading their second book in book clubs in ELA. It is exciting to see the kids "devour" the books they have chosen. To hear them argue and discuss different points of the book is really exciting. We will continue to study the diary of Hattie Campbell.

Math Extension time will be spent reviewing the concepts presented in Unit 9. Volume, surface area, and ordered pairs are a few of the concepts we will be reviewing.
