September 2022

Big picture

August was a very busy moth here at Tōtara Springs with 4 very succesful Sports Camps come rain or sunshine. We would like to thank Andrew Lind and his family that has put so much time and effort into arranging and running them!

In the month of September we have another 2 Sports Camps as well as school groups that will grace us with their presence and we are looking forward to having them here at camp with us!

Leadership Training Opportunities

As you may know, Christian camping is the perfect training ground for young leaders looking for experience in ministry. This Spring we will be holding both Overnight and Day Kids Camps and need capable young people who are ready for the challenge and blessing of serving at camp.

If you know of any Teens aged 16 and older that would be interested in joining our Team here at Tōtara Springs as a Kids Camp Leader, please sign them up using the link below.

Spring Kids Camps

We are incredibly excited to be rebooting Kids Camp this Spring! Alongside this, we are also thrilled to announce our first ever week-long Day Camp. We are currently full for Kids Camp and have kids on the waitlist. Day Camp is also set to be another jam-packed affair. In order to run these camps, we rely on an incredible team of volunteers to help lead in cabins and provide our kids with a safe and meaningful experience at camp.

Becoming a Leader: We are currently recruiting approximately 17 leaders (7 Kids Camp, 10 Day Camp, Age 16+) to serve alongside us at camp this Spring and would love to hear from anyone who is interested in gaining this experience. God knows which leaders need to be here, we can't wait to meet them. There are still a few spaces left for 15 year olds as well. Please pass this on to anyone you know of who might be interested.

Getting the Word Out: Partnering with churches is a priority for us in ministry and our team are always happy to come out and visit to discuss opportunities we have available here at camp. We have a range of promotional materials available should you wish to promote volunteer opportunities in your church/youth group.

Dear Tōtara Springs Family

This past month has been a whirlwind of activity and travel for me. I was able to take the interns to visit Lakes Ranch Christian Camp, and Peter Bichan took us on a Kayaking trip to Hot Water Beach on Lake Tarawera. Finlay Park hosted the CCNZ Managers Conference which was such an encouragement to me and the Senior Leadership Team as well as Steve Hamilton from the board. It was great to see 14 camps from around New Zealand networking and connecting both managers and board members. And then just a week later my wife and I were invited to attend the CCNZ Ministry Coordinator Conference at El Rancho. What a great opportunity to connect with the ones who are boots on the ground with ministry initiatives and programmes all over New Zealand. We especially enjoyed connecting with Bruce & Sarah O’Brien who live and manage El Rancho. Shout out to Peter Dobbs and the CCNZ team for all the work they are doing to keep all of us camp people connected.

The fencing project is underway and the first stretch of fencing has now been installed in front of the single housing and around the two new staff houses. Just today I was chatting with Mark Forrest as he set out the perimeter for the new Sports Office which is finally being built (many COVID and consent related delays). We are all joining Andrew, who is over the moon excited to see this project come to fruition. Watch this space. The cabin project is progressing nicely with plans and direction, we recently put up a sign on the soccer field with information for when we have tours. If you would be interested in having a tour to see the project and grounds please let our office know.

We have a great team of people working at the Springs and we’re always looking for a few more to join us. Current roles include: 2 Cooks, a part-time Sports Coordinator, as well as volunteer leaders for holiday camps. If you know anyone with experience and a heart for serving Jesus, please send them our way! They can apply from the “Get Involved” tab on our website.

Our first Annual fundraising banquet is happening on Saturday 19th November and we’re hoping to get our alumni engaged. If you would like to collaborate with us to make it happen please contact me right away. Many blessings to you all!

WELCOME: We are very excited to welcome Gayle Tai to our Housekeeping Team!

VACANCIES: We are still looking for 2x Cooks to join our Catering Team as well as a part-time Sports Coordinator.

CONGRATULATIONS: We would like to congratulate the Wright and Baldwin families for tying the knot on Saturday 3rd of September. Welcome to the TSCC Family Joe, Blakely and Jeb!

Anna and Joe, we wish you a huge congratulations and may the love of God be ever-present in your marriage.

Last month, the Ministry Development Team (Anna Wright & Anna Roughton) together with 3 of the interns (Kiana, Emma, Tavita) headed to the CCNZ National Gathering at El Rancho, Waikanae. We spent 3 days gathering with other Kids Camp Coordinators from all over the country, diving into a range of different topics including working with neurodiversity, leadership discipleship and training and inclusive camping. One of the highlights for all of us was the opportunity to hear others’ stories and gather fresh insights. It was amazing to know that there is such a large group of people out there doing a similar role, facing similar challenges and trying new things and to be reminded that we are a part of a wider Christian Camping family. We are really excited for the continued opportunities to grow these relationships and work alongside other camps in our region to help share the love of Jesus.

The Staff housing fencing project is coming right along and we would just like to thank Brad Clifton and the Property Team for all the great and hard work they have been putting into it.

The start of the Sports office project is finally here. In the pictures below, you can see the area cordoned off where it is going to make its mark. We look forward to showing you the progress over the coming months!
