Humphreys Avenue Elementary Centennial Anniversary
Humphreys Avenue Elementary has been serving the community for 100 years. It was built in 1921-1922 and opened its doors with 12 classrooms in 1923. Located in the heart of East Los Angeles, the legacy of Humphreys is rooted in the Ready for the World mantra that embodies productive citizens and fosters pride in the community, for students to become compassionate, confident, and socially conscious citizens that are ready for the 21st century to thrive in college, career, and life.
Humphreys has prepared generations of young learners to become successful in all walks of life, ranging from entrepreneurs, district educators, engineers, and many other career fields. We continue to build strong relationships with our community to service our students and families. Our school proudly offers three programs that allow our families options on how to best impact student learning. The evolution of the community needs is the heart of the programs that reflect today’s multilingual, multicultural, and digital identity era. The collaboration and commitment from all stakeholders embraces the centennial celebration with enthusiasm.
Ford Blvd. Elementary School and Dual Language Academy Received the CABE Award
Ford Blvd. Elementary School and Dual Language Academy have been awarded the prestigious California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) Seal of Excellence. This recognition honors schools that have successfully implemented a bilingual education program that promotes biliteracy, bilingualism, and social-cultural competency. To receive this award, schools must meet rigorous criteria that demonstrate a strong commitment to bilingual education, including evidence of academic success, linguistic proficiency, and cultural awareness.
Receiving the CABE Seal of Excellence is a significant accomplishment in that we are the only school in LAUSD to have received this award. This reflects the dedication and hard work of our teachers, staff, students, and families. It is a testament to our commitment to provide an excellent education that celebrates diversity, fosters academic achievement, and supports the development of well-rounded students.
At Ford Blvd. Elementary School and Dual Language Academy, we are proud to offer a dual language immersion program that provides students with the opportunity to learn in both English and Spanish. Our bilingual program promotes academic achievement, multiculturalism, and global citizenship. We strive to provide our students with a comprehensive education that prepares them for success in a multilingual and multicultural world.
As we continue to service the needs of our students, we are grateful for the support of our school community. We look forward to continuing to provide students with an outstanding education that prepares them for success in a global society.
Eastman Elementary School Takes Third Place in the Conga Kids Dancing Competition
The well-known and highly regarded Spanish speaking newspaper, “La Opinion” wrote an article acknowledging the hard work and dedication of about 200 students representing 17 participating school districts in the “Conga Kids!” annual dance competition held at LA LIVE on Wednesday May 10, 2023. The most amazing surprise for Eastman Avenue Elementary was to be given the honor to make the front page of the newspaper. The Eastman Avenue dancers proudly received third place, but it felt like getting first place for these East Los Angeles Students thus adding yet another reason for their community to celebrate their achievement.
“Conga Kids!” believes that magic is created at the intersection of community, dance, and music - and harnessing that magic can transform lives. Their in-school residency programs give students a celebratory introduction to social dance forms of the African Diaspora – celebrating the cultural, historical, and musical origins of each dance practice, creating shared understanding of global perspectives, and promoting empathy and pride of culture within our diverse school communities.
Through dynamic lessons taught by artists from Los Angeles’s vibrant dance community, our students (aka “the Conga Kids!”) explore styles including Merengue, Samba, Rumba, Salsa, Cumbia, Danzón, Authentic Jazz, and Hip Hop.
