Book Of The Month
My favourite book at the moment is Finding Winnie: the True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear, written by Lindsay Mattick and illustrated by Sophie Blackall.
When did you first read this book?
I first read this book when the library received a copy of it after the book was shortlisted for the Golden Dragon Book Awards.
What is most appealing thing about this book?
I love the way the author shares with readers not only the historical background of Winnie-the-Pooh but also her own personal story. Essentially, It is a story within a story, with the author telling her son a true story about the bear adopted by her great-grandfather and how this bear inspired Winnie-the-Pooh. This writing style brings the historical story to life and invite readers to become part of the conversation between mother and child.
Who is this book for?
Young readers who would like to find out more about the famous Winnie-the-Pooh and enjoy a fun story at the same time.
What will you remember most about this book?
The picture of Winnie and Harry in the last section of the book.Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your choice?
As with all picture books, illustrations are very important in conveying the author's message. The vignettes throughout the book reinforced the story-telling writing style and by adding a lot of detail into the illustrations, readers are able to better visualise and immerse themselves into the story. I would imagine a lot of research must have been done to come up with so much detail!

Academic Honesty
Miranda Quinney
Miranda introduced the concept of the collaborative book. This is where the start of the story has been prepared and then each student was asked to write their individual follow-on chapter, itself a self-contained story. Miranda and the students explored the process of creative writing - what is involved, how to test and improve the story, the importance of checking and editing.
The result will be a complete book with 30 chapters for each class. At the moment, the students are finishing their chapters and completing the illustrations which will then be typeset and made into a book which can be purchased. The classroom teachers will obviously be keeping parents informed about the progress...
It was an excellent workshop and a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience the process of writing, editing and putting a book together!
