3. EVALUATION OF 2016-2017 (If you weren't at the meeting, please reply with your own answers to the youth leadership team)
- What were some victories you saw this year?
- What were some struggles you experienced this year?
- What were some needs you noticed this year?
Some things we've heard:
- Enjoyed seeing the inter-generational mix
- Some of our quiet kids finally opened up
- Loved seeing the baptisms this year
- Struggled with communication, organization, and direction
- Hard first couple of months
4. PASTORAL EVALUATION
- Overall goal achieved and then some: I believe that our goal to make sure all the youth are known and connected was achieved and surpassed.
- Need to find balance of grace & truth (i.e. discipline): We should have been more proactive as a leadership team to call out sins, warn those who are wavering, and counseled our students through dark times.
- Build off the momentum of this year: While we achieved connections and relationships, we must not stop there. We did a great job getting to know each other but we must use this to disciple. If all we do in this youth group is just "community" than we are no different than a social club. We use relationships as a means towards discipleship
- Focused, intentional training: We need more distinct training for leaders (esp. when it comes to middle school and high school). I realized that we did more of that training for other churches than our own.
WHAT IS THE BIG VISION? “To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ…” (Eph. 4:12)
THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF YOUTH MINISTRY
Question: Are YOU making disciples who can make disciples?
LONG TERM VISION
If you were to ask me what I'd like to see CBC YOUTH MINISTRY become this is what I would say. Again, this is my personal unicorn and something I'd like to see happen in my lifetime.
1. Equip disciples to make disciple
2. Send out disciples that are equipped to plant, revitalize, and transform.
- Struggling youth groups
- College campuses
STRATEGY FOR 2017-2018
1. Main way of growth will be in the context of intentional discipleship and membership: Let me remind you that programs, events, and events are just vehicles for discipleship. Real discipleship will take place on the day-to-day process. To be honest, real discipleship should actually be occurring in the homes with the youth and their parents. So no program is sacred when all is said and done and we can/should continue to change and improve and adjust for the seasons. But discipleship will take all of us leaders to take a youth from spiritual/social immaturity to maturity.
2. Contextualize growth paths by developmental stages: we're going to begin to focus more and more on different stages in life - i.e. Middle School and High School. Not just for the youth, but for parents and for our leaders to start to "specialize" in how we interact and develop our youth.
THINGS TO NOTE:
- The vision/structure/leadership of CBC
- Frequent changes in culture and social structures
- Life Stages of leaders
Proposals for 2017-2018
- Community Groups based off of life stage
- Gender-specific discipleship
- Accounting for new leaders
2. HS/MS Executive Teams
- Train respective leaders
- Equip respective youth members
- Organize events
- Parents ministry
ROLES OF THE ADULT LEADERS
- Matthew 22:37: Ultimately, I expect you to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. To pursue Jesus seriously and unapologetically.
- Live the Core Values: Not only are you to love Jesus and pursue him, but also to trust his plan and way for your life and live it out consistently. That you would be held to at least the same standard that we're trying to get the youth to live up to.
- Love & Invest in our Youth: I expect you to actually love our youth and to want Jesus for them. I want you to see them as a treasure rather than a burden. A gift rather than a chore. I want you to be excited when you see them, miss them when you're not around them, and want others to love them as well.
- Expect to be present: For the sake of your own good and the benefit of the youth and this ministry, be present. Show up to things. Initiate meetings with the students. Go to events with the students (i.e. business meetings, prayer meetings, and church wide events) Our students will always follow you and your attitude when it comes to attendance.
- Work as a team (communicate, forgive, initiate) If we do this, we do this as a team. Nobody is above another and we must remember that we work together in light of the Gospel. Which means we must communicate, forgive, and initiate unity, compassion, and love. As you all know, working with other adults is not easy. You will be corrected, rejected at times, and disappointed. But if you honestly believe that the Gospel is the Gospel, then make sure you have that in mind and it allows you to move past grievances with each other.
- Be a student of students. We work in youth ministry because we love the youth. But we must know who the students are instead of assuming. We must always be involved in what they love and get to know them on a personal level. All leaders must. Ask questions, listen, clarify...
