Principal's Corner
February has arrived. Wow, this school year seems to be passing by very quickly. Please remind your child to dress appropriately for recess each and every day. We go outside for recess unless the temperature is below zero. Students need warm coats, snow pants, boots, hats, and gloves to ensure they stay warm and dry while they play in the snow. If you need assistance with any of these items, please let the office know and we'll get you the items you need.
Our NWEA winter testing is completed. Teachers use the results of the NWEA math and reading tests to determine which WIN group is needed for each student as well as small group instruction in the classroom. You should hear from your child’s teacher regarding these results soon.
Yours in Education,

Kids Heart Challenge
Who: Steeby students
What: Kids Heart Challenge Event
When: During PE at the end of February
Where: Steeby Gym
How: Collect $5 or more for the American Heart Association. (Online or return in envelope)
Why: It is important to build a strong, healthy heart, for yourself, by being active for 60 minutes each day. It is also important to help others who need to have heart surgeries and to help raise awareness of the importance of heart health by collecting $5 donation.
Transportation Information
Dear Wildcat Families:
A note from the Transportation Department
The transportation department will NOT be able to allow friends to ride home with students due to the full capacity of our buses. Notes will not be accepted.
Job Openings!
WUS is still short two bus drivers for routes (WUS will train you!) - please apply at transportation@waylandunion.org (express interest to Transportation Director, Tim Washburn).
Thank you for your understanding!
Physical Education Fun
We have been busy exercising and playing sports the past couple months. We recently played some winter games and have been working on hockey since returning from break. We learned and practiced the skills and then spent some time putting them into a game. They all looked like excellent hockey players by the end of our unit!
We are starting Kids Heart Challenge this month as well. All students should have seen the introduction video and received their supplies. We are encouraging everybody to sign up (they get a free wristband) whether they can receive donations or not. The free Kids Heart Challenge app is great for this, and there are child friendly games that can help them earn a character as well. This money goes towards the American Heart Association and is used for raising awareness and helping with surgery/medicine for those that need it. It is a great opportunity to teach compassion for those in need. The students will be doing physical activities for the Kids Heart Challenge the week of February 24th. The students will also receive prizes based on how much they raise. Additionally, the more money we raise, the more US Games donates for new equipment every year! Notes from Music
Happy February from the music room at Steeby!
During the month of December the students learned songs and dances for the different holidays celebrated during December.
During January, second graders have been learning/reviewing rhythms and solfege through songs and rhymes. They have also played instruments and learned some new dances like Sasha and The Snow Day Dance.
Third graders have been working on learning songs for their upcoming music program. The music program will be held on March 22 at the Wayland Fine Arts Center. More details about the program will be coming soon. They have also been reviewing rhythms and solfege through new songs and they have been learning some new dances.

Media Moments
January has been a busy month in media class. We have been doing some fun activities in the computer lab. Students made their own snowflakes on the computer after watching the Bookflix video Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin. The book Snowflake Bentley won a Caldecott award for best pictures. The students also listened to the book One Word for Kids by Jon Gordon. Then students decided on their one word and printed it out using Abcya Paint. Both Abcya Paint and the Snowflake activity can be found on Information Place. Here is the link to the Information Place website: https://sites.google.com/waylandunion.org/libraries/home .
Next week students will find out if any of our Mock Caldecott picks won an actual Caldecott or Caldecott honor for best illustrations. It has been a busy and exciting month in media class! Happy reading and creating!
