Love is a Mess

Helena's and Hermia's List of Random Thematic Songs

Theme: Love is a Mess

A Midsummer Nights Dream is a play primarily about love and the perils that come with it. With those messages, however, comes a message that love is a mess. Thus, these songs are designed to explore the trouble with love and explore what that might mean to a fictional character who doesn't exist.
Troll Song

Song 1: Troll Song by Unknown

Sometimes, love just does this to you, like it seems to do a lot in the play. Not loved, than suddenly loved. Helena thinks she's being trolled, because she wasn't loved at all and now she is. Also, this song is funny.

Perhaps Helena would listen to this every time something bad happened to her, because that would be what she felt other people were thinking about her.

Note: Doesn't work with safety mode on, but you probably know the song anyway.

Pharrell Williams - Happy (Official Music Video)

Song 2: Happy by Pharrel Williams

"Because I'm happy..."
But love also sometimes does the opposite, and returns a positive result, like it does at the end of the play.
I think Helena would play the song when she was, well, happy.
Disney's Frozen "Let It Go" Sequence Performed by Idina Menzel

Song 3: Let It Go by Idina Menzel

"Let it go..."
Sometimes, it has to be done to calm yourself down. Helena and Hermia were both angry at times, and just letting it go might have solved it.
Like the last song, Helena or Hermia might listen to it as inspiration.
Star Wars- The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)

Song 4: Star Wars Imperial March by John Williams

Sometimes, love just gets confusing, and people think that you're dumb and attack you for who you love. Just like the song. Also, it has drama, just like the play.

Helena might play this loudly when someone attacked them to perhaps annoy them.

Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture (Full with Cannons)

Song 5: 1812 Overture by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

"Loud Dramatic Music"

Sometimes, love is dramatic too. In fact, that is what most of the play is about. This song captures it well.

Hermia and Helena might play it when something dramatic had happened.

Ylvis - Jan Egeland [Official music video HD]

Song 6: Jan Egeland by Ylvis

"Send in Jan Egeland..."

But love is also shown as having a male hero: Although the play doesn't support it, Hermia was constantly exposed to this sexist mindset.

Hermia and Helena might not listen to this, but their husbands certainly might to make themselves feel powerful.

Song 7: Gangnam Style by PSY

"Apa gangnam style..."
The song is, when translated, about men trying to impress women, just like in the play. After all, that's what always seems to happen.
I don't think Hermia or Helena would ever actually listen to this.
Taio Cruz - Dynamite

Song 8: Dynamite by Taio Cruz

"Like it's dynamite..."
Men try to impress women by holding a party. This happens in the play too, when Theseus holds a giant party for Hippolyta at her wedding, symbolizing that love is a manipulable thing.
Hermia or Helena may listen to this to get themselves pumped up.
Everything Is AWESOME!!! -- The LEGO® Movie -- Tegan and Sara feat. The Lonely Island

Song 9: Everything is Awesome by The Lonley Island

"Everything is awesome!"
When love goes well, it's great. Love can be a mess, but it can be the opposite too, like the end of the play.
Hermia or Helena may listen to this when they think, you know... (everything is awesome)
Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out (Original version) | Full HD | 1080p

Song 10: Who Let the Dogs Out by Baha Men

"Who let the dogs out..."
Women are sometimes harassed, and although the play isn't really about it, it does mention the pressure put on Hermia by Demetrius for her to marry him.
I don't know, really, when Hermia would listen to this.
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

Bonus Song: Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley

"Never gonna give you up..."

Hermia, at the beginning of the play, is dedicated to Lysander, and will never give him up for Demetrius. Also, you just got Rick-Rolled!

Hermia might listen to this when she had competition for her love.
