Berkeley Lake Elementary
Bear Essentials - October 16, 2015
Principal for a Day
On Tues. morning, I had the privilege of attending the kick-off breakfast for GCPS’ and the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce’s 2015 Principal for the Day Program. I am so excited that Jeanne Aulbach from Peachtree Corners City Council, who lives in our community, will join us Nov. 17, during American Education Week. Sharing our fine teaching and learning for the day with a community member is always a highlight.
Next week we will participate in Unity Day, National Bullying Prevention. At Berkeley Lake Elementary School we stand united against bullying and want all students to be safe and secure. Show your support when it comes to bullying and wear orange on Wednesday, Oct. 21. All students will sign an orange anti-bullying paper chain pledge that will be hung in the front hallway. Thank you to Ms. Maida and Ms. Marantz for facilitating this awareness activity.
Great Days of Service Project
Also next week is the Great Days of Service Project. This project is a joint community service initiative between Gwinnett County Public Schools, the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services and the United Way. Together, we collect needed donations and deliver them to Gwinnett shelters, all Gwinnett food pantries and Gwinnett Battered Women's and Children's Shelters. Berkeley Lake Elementary is proud to be a part of Great Days of Service and help our community! If you would like to help, please have your child bring any of the following items to school Monday, Oct. 19, through Thursday, Oct. 22 and drop the items off in the front lobby: Canned soups and fruits, mac & cheese, canned proteins, peanut butter & jelly, toilet paper and personal care items (toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, soap). Thank you for your kind donations as we teach the children about service to the community and helping others.
2nd and 5th Graders will be Testing
Next week our 2nd and 5th graders will participate in the IOWA National Assessment Monday, Oct. 19, through Friday, Oct. 23. Please be sure that your child is in school every day and on time so they can participate with their class in this assessment. Please remember to have your child get plenty of rest, eat a hearty breakfast and arrive on time each day. Also please do not check out students during morning testing. Each day testing should be done by 12:00.
Bus Driver Appreciation Week
Next week is also Bus Driver Appreciation Week. We will be honoring our drivers Wed. morning with breakfast to go. Driving a bus while keeping the children behind you safe is a very challenging job, yet these folks do it twice a day. Please take a moment to let your bus driver know you appreciate all he or she does each morning and afternoon.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record®
We will be joining the 10th anniversary of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record®, a global campaign that generates public support for high-quality early learning and highlights the importance of building children’s vocabulary and love for reading on Thursday, Oct. 22. We will participate in the world’s largest shared reading experience with the book, Not Norman: A Goldfish Story, written by Kelly Bennett and illustrated by Noah Z. Jones. Ms. Page has invited some guest readers to share the humorous tale with our kindergarten and first graders. Digital books in both Spanish and English, activities and resources can be located using the link: https://www.jstart.org/campaigns/read-for-the-record .
Today report cards are being sent home. Please make time to review your child’s achievement with him or her. If they are doing their best, make sure they know you are proud of their work and efforts put forth. If they are struggling, work together on a plan to improve. Remember Berkeley Lake has a Parent Center full of resources that is open daily. If you need ideas on how to specifically help your child, please contact your child’s teacher.
PTA Turkey Trot and Pancake Breakfast
Be sure to mark your calendars for the annual PTA Turkey Trot and Pancake Breakfast, Saturday, Nov. 7. Today is the deadline to guarantee a shirt on race day. However, you can still sign up and your shirt will come later. After Fri., Oct. 30, the price goes up to $18.
E-SPLOST is on the Nov. 3 ballot!
Gwinnett County voters will be asked to extend the special purpose local option sales tax for education (E-SPLOST) on Nov. 3. Over the years E-SPLOST has funded education capital projects that have benefited all students in Gwinnett County. It is important for Gwinnett citizens to be aware of the E-SPLOST and the district’s plan for meeting the classroom and technology needs of Gwinnett’s growing student enrollment. For more information please go to the GCPS website gwinnett.k12.ga.us.
