Principal's Message

Lisa Dailey

Directora de HMS

Greetings Hazelbrook Families,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and that your new year is starting off well. While it was nice to spend time with my family over the break, I was excited to come back and see all of our students and staff.

We kicked off the new year with our new cell phone policy and students are doing great! Another week will be spent reminding students as they adjust to this new rule. On January 16th, we will begin holding students to higher expectations. If their phones are out, we will ask them to either bring it to the office until the end of the day or to give it to a staff member to do so. Someone will give a parent/guardian a call when this happens so you can stay informed of their phone use at school. If the phone remains a distraction, our progressive response will be:

  • 2nd time:

    • Phone sent to the office

    • Phone call to parent/guardian

    • Lunch detention

    • Referral

  • 3rd time:

    • All of the above

    • Parent must pick the phone up in the office

    • Tech plan established that may include turning phone into the office every morning

  • 4+ times:

    • All of the above

    • After school detention

Again, our intent is not to punish students but to keep them safe as they navigate the world of social media and technology. When we use technology in schools, it should remain focused on instruction and learning.

So far we have been extremely impressed with how well they have responded to this new policy. I am so proud of them for this!

In partnership,

Lisa Dailey

Community Meeting

The week of January 9th, in Community Meetings, we will be revisiting our school-wide expectations with students as a refresher as we start 2023. At the beginning of each year, we teach students the HMS values and expectations based on being Safe, Responsible, and Kind. We want to revisit and reteach these expectations, as well as update students directly on the new personal electronics policy around cell phones and other devices.
